2005.10.1 Interview with Miss Deng, Shu Huei in the Chu-Nan Snake Kiln

1. Q: Miss Deng, how long have you been engaged in pottery making?

Miss Deng: Ten years or so.

2. Q: What are differences between wood-firing and gas-firing?

Miss Deng: Wood-firing is fueled by firewood. There are a variety of fuels for pottery making such as wood, coal, petroleum and gas. In those years, firewood was just one kind of fuels. However, since the creation of pottery has taken a hit, wood-firing is one way of pottery creation, which presents some features of firewood, fire and soil. And wood firing is harder to control than gas.

3. Q: What kind of wood do you use as fuels?

Miss Deng: Primarily imported pinewood.

4. Q: How do you get it?

Miss Deng: The wood shops nearby. They provide our waste wood material. Basically, we don’t have to pay. If so, we can’t make both ends meet. So, we just take care of the transportation charges.

5. Q: How much wood does it need to kiln at a time?

Miss Deng: We never tell. About 3 to 5 tons and it also depends on the weather. If it’s good weather, we save energy, and if not, we spend more. Also, it’s about humidity and climate. It might take 3 tons to reach 1100 degrees. For more 100 degrees, we have to add much more fuels on it.

6. Q: What is the future perspective for the Chu-Nan Snake Kiln?

Miss Deng:
(1) We will make courses and learning materials of traditional pottery in order to promote teaching and lecturing.
(2) We will develop pottery in a professional way into the life of the public to encourage people to participate.
