Palakaw:
Amis Ecological Fishing Environment
1. Palakaw is a unique form of traditional
Amis fishing method in Fataan. This method
is known for make use of natural resources
based on the characteristics of rivers and
swamps in order to maintain an ecological
environment with excellent conditions for
reproductions of natural livings. As a
result, fishermen will be benefited.
2. Using palakaw method, fishermen dig holes
along riverbanks or areas with plenty of
water and establish two openings on each
side of a hole; fishes are free of coming in
and out. As a result, fresh water fishes and
shrimps will be making their way to the mud
holes for staying and reproductions.
3. Arrange betel palm tree trunks at the
bottom of a mud hole, lay tree branches on
the middle layer, and top with bamboos.
4. According to tribal elderly, the bottom
section of a mud hole is designed for
loaches, walking catfishes, and eels while
the middle section is perfect for shrimps
and the top section provides shelters for
smaller fishes from their predators.
5. Because this method is designed to
establish appropriate environment conditions
and free of baiting, fishermen’s catch works
according to the principle of the food
chain.
Within 3 to 4 weeks of plakaw completions,
there shall be fishes available for
fishermen. During this period, aquatic
vegetations grow in the mud holes. Using
environment friendly method for fishing is
one of the major characteristics of Fataan
wetland ecological area.
A. Top layer: The space between bamboo
branches are big enough for bigger fishes
and also provide shelters for smaller fishes
from their predators. It provides a balance
among different groups of fishes.
B. Middle layer: It is designed for shrimps
by which fishes are lured into fishing
ponds. To maintain good conditions for
shrimps to grown, less space between tree
branches will accomplish the goal.
C. Bottom layer: The bottom mud is rich in
nutrients. Bamboo culms (serpentine or betel
palm trees)
