The appearance of Mesona looks like peppermint, and the flower head looks like the one for basil. If you are not familiar with Mesona, you may neglect our new legend crop when you walk by its farming fields.

Before we talk about Mesona contracted production in Ershui, let us introduce the characteristics of its branches, trunk, leaf, flower, and fruit.

Property

Mesona is an annual herb, and its height is about 15~100 cm.

Branches, trunk and leaf 

The plant patterns of Mesona include erect type, semi-erect type, andcreeping type. The upper half of Mesona’s stem appears erect shape while the lower half is in four prism shape with green, light violet red, or violet red color, and attaches to ground. The whole plant is covered with colorless hairs. The length of stem vine can be up to about 2 meter.

The leaves of Mesona grow symmetrically. There are some hairs on their surface. The leaves are narrow in oval shape or wide oval shape, the length is about 2 to 5 cm, and the width is about 0.8 to 2.8 cm. The front-end of a leaf appears to be sharp shape or blunt shape. The bottom of a leaf appears to be wide wedge shape or round shape. The leaf margin is hackly shape, and both sides contain fine bristle or hairs.

Flower

Mesona is one ofthe labiatae. Its flowering season is around July toOctober. The flowers grow on top of the plant, but some may grow on lateral branches. The bract of Mesona is round shape, or diamond-shaped oval. The calyx is bell shape with dense hairs. Its corolla is either while or light red color with a length about 3 cm and tiny hairs on the surface. The flower’s color is violet.

Fruit

Mesona’s fruit season is in August to November. Its fruit is hard, appear to be round shape, and the color is black.
