About Chess-cake

As a child, the founder of Joy-Well Bakery Co. was so obsessed with chess that he skipped meals from time to time. His mother once scolded him for "feeding himself on chess pieces" little did she know those half-joking remarks would later inspire the bestselling product of Joy-Well. Joy-Well was founded in 1905 as a licensed retailer of salt and sugar that served the entire Zuoying area during the Japanese colonial period. It was frepuented by dependants of the Nationalist military personnel that retreated to Taiwan after 1949.

Ever since the Nationalist government took control of Taiwan and deregulated the supply of salt and sugar, Joy-Well had been transforming into a manufacturer and wholesaler of baked goods ranging from traditional-style wedding pastries, cakes for birthdays (including the one-month birthday), celebratory, longevity foods for over-60-years-olds (such as longevity cakes, longevity nuts, peach-shaped buns and longevity noodles), souvenirs for friends and families, to food offerings for religious events.

It was by sheer accident that Joy-Welll hired an experienced baker from Shanghai when it started a second corporate transformation in 1955. The baker, who followed the Nationalist troops to Taiwan and carried two sets of baking moulds with him, developed premium-quality mung bean pastries that were soffly textured, pleasantly sweet and low in sugar content. Joy-Well's insistence on preservative-free recipes that comprise nothing but natural ingredients has won Wannian Folklore Festival 2001, Joy-Well launched the Chess Cookies as a combination of religious and regional heritage. The creative delicacy was announced by Kaohsiung City Government as a "souvenir of regional distinctiveness" making Joy-well Bakery Co. a household name across Taiwan.

Chinese Chess Cake

With its low-sugar and non-antiseptic products, the Joy Well Cakes Store one hundred years old store found in 1905, is proud of its health orientation. Since 2004, the City of Kaohsiung has recommended the Chung-Wide bakery store's famous green bean cake to be made of "Chinese-chess cake" and promoted it as a special souvenir for the "Chi-Gu" festival in the Love River bank of Kaohsiung.

The Chinese-chess cake is also known as "Jiang-Shuai" cake. Not only playable but also eatable, it brings more fun in the chess game. In the contest of the most 10 special gifts of Kaohsiung, this Chinese chess cakes has the honor to be elected in the second place.

Fire lion Cake

Zuoying was used to be the administrative center of the Wan-Nien County. Surrounding by many temples, the Lotus Pond is the only place for religion carnival in Taiwan. There are many unique religious activities during the carnival i.e. "Attacking cannon castle" and "touring fire lion". The fire lion is the spirit symbol of the Wan-Nien Festival. Requested by the City of Kaohsiung, Joy Well cake store hs created a special fire lion cake by using husked lotus and and red bean. Da-dao-gong peace cake

The god of birth of Ciji temper in Zuoying is also known as "Da-dao-gong". In the old time, people put water spinach on the table to honor Da-dao-gong's legend for his mercy and kindness. This old fashion is still retained until now in Zuoying area. Picking from the spirits of this local belief, the "Da-dao-gong" peace cake is made from whole water spinach plant by Joy Well cake store. With its nutrition and special taste of water spinach, the "Da-dao-gong" peace cake becomes a very popular dessert.

Almonds cookie

In the 50s, Taiwan recovered from the war. We are lack of all the materials and the food even hard preserve. Joy Well cake store used their experienced baking skill to create the "Almonds Cookies" for the travelers. The almonds cookies has powdery and light almond taste. Hope-ping pang cookie ball

Also, the cookie balls represent the daughter's family and wish the husband's family can take of their daughter.
