「Mr. Lian-fa Lin told us, “Running the election for the position of Neighborhood Chief was a happy accident. At that time, my father served as the first chairman of Beiji Temple Elderly Association, a private organization in the community. I thought we should do a great job serving others so I helped him to set up the association by submitting an application with the government. Once approved by the government, the association can ask for official budgets in activity organization. When my father was the chairman, the events were very successful and the association had as many as 288 members. His service was great and he was very popular. People encouraged him to run the election for Neighborhood Chief, but he felt he was too old for it. He then suggested me to compete for the post because I had been helping him out with the association affairs. I had never thought about becoming a politician. I was merely trying to do my best. I had three discussions with my family and I had their full support. Local residents also gave me a lot of encouragement. This was how I decided to run the election.”
