Tourist Survey

Tourist Survey

街頭問卷

We interviewed 30 tourists, 19 of whom agreed to have their photos taken and 11 of whom declined, though all of them were friendly enough to fill out our survey for us. Our analyses based on survey results are as follows:

Question 1: Do you know why this place is called Xiaoxi Street? (Approximately the area around Chenleng Road, Changxing Street, and Changan Street
1

Analysis 1: Only 9 people, comprising 30 percent of the tourists who took our survey, knew that the area around Chenleng Road, Changxing Road, and Changan Road is called Xiaoxi Street.

Question 2: By what means of transportation did you come here?

2

Analysis 2: Out of all the means of transportation, mopeds were employed as means of transportation by the greatest number of people, 8 in all; the number of people who walked and those who took the train and then walked comprise the next largest group, 11 people in all and constituting 36 percent of the total number of persons taking our survey. Only 4 people arrived by car, which perhaps is due to the lack of parking spaces in Xiaoxi.

Question 3: Why did you come here?

3

Analysis 3: 12 people, comprising 42 percent of our sample pool, came here specifically to visit Xiaoxi, 8 people were just passing by, and 8 people were local residents.

Question 4: If you came here specifically to visit Xiaoxi, how did you gather your information on Xiaoxi?

4

Analysis 4: Out of those who came specifically to visit Xiaoxi, the majority of the people (9 in all) learned what they knew of Xiaoxi via the introduction of family and friends, 3 gathered information online, 1 gathered information from books, 1 from magazines/newspapers, and two from other electronic media.

Question 5: How often do you come here?
5

Analysis 5: Nearly half of the people (13 in all) come here once every six months, and those who come more than once a month are mostly local residents.

Question 6: What local cuisines would you recommend? (Multiple selections allowed)

6

Analysis 6: Out of the cuisines listed, A-chang Taiwanese Meatballs was recommended by the largest number of people, the reason of which possibly being its impeccable flavor as well as its appearance in movies. Next is the Fried Glutinous Rice Cakes. The number of people who recommend Changhua Taiwanese Meatballs and those who recommend Niaochia Noodles are pretty close, whereas no one recommends Xiaoxi Flour Drinks. It can be inferred from this result that the more renowned the cuisine, the more recommendation it receives.

Question 7: Do you know of any of the scenic spots of Xiaoxi Street? (Multiple selections allowed)

7

Analysis 7: The most well-known scenic spot is Gaobinge Tavern (Railway Hospital), followed by Red Leaf Hotel. Variance of familiarity with other scenic spots is minimal.

Question 8: Do you think it is clean here?

Analysis 8: Most tourists think that Xiaoxi Street is on the whole clean; three people believe it needs improvement.

Question 9: What aspects of Xiaoxi Street do you think is in need of improvement? (Multiple selections allowed)

9

Analysis 9: Tourists believe that Xiaoxi Street can become better with more parking spaces, public restrooms, and trash bins. This faithfully reflects the needs of tourists, and coincides to a large extent with what the shop owners have been requesting: more parking spaces, so that more tourists are willing to come to Xiaoxi Street.

Question 10: If you decide to walk, do you know how to reach the following historical relics? (Multiple selections allowed)

10

Analysis 10: The number of tourists who know how to reach the Roundhouse and the Confucius Temple is the greatest. Minimal variance is observed in the number of tourists who know how to arrive by foot at other historical relics. This shows us the historical relics with which tourists are most familiar.

Comprehensive analysis and reflections:

Most tourists were friendly enough to take our survey, and we also prepared bookmarks from our school for them as souvenirs. We thank them for helping us collect relevant data on Xiaoxi Street.

Generally speaking, most tourists are fairly content with the environment and cuisines of Xiaoxi Street. We believe that more promotion for historical relics, historical buildings, and other less well-known cuisines are required: since most tourists learn about Xiaoxi through friends and relatives, greater promotional emphasis should conversely be placed upon the internet and books. We hope that our website will contribute to this end. The City Hall can also plan tourist routes, and incorporate into it scenic spots that are within walking distance, so as to offer tourists with ample referential data on sightseeing, traffic, and foods. The number of tourists should grow if these concepts are effectively implemented.
