the reign of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty. It is located in Tientzuwei of
Lujhou. Therefore, it is called “Field beauty.” A horizontal inscribed board
reads “Wai Han” (inscribed by examination Juren Shou-Huei Lo) is hung above the front gate of the ancient
house. There is one half-moon shaped lotus pool in front of the house and a small
canal leading to Danshui River. Li’s ancient house has been maintained well so
far, and is a typical building of traditional rural family settlement in
Taiwan. At present, the ancient house is surrounded by skyscrapers. Such a
strong comparison makes people perceive the strong contrast between modern
buildings and traditional ones. Such a unique architectural phenomenon reflects
the history in Taiwan, as well as the loss of convention.

6. Ancient Flagstone
Path in the Qing Dynasty
Desheng Street used to be called “Ancient
flagstone path in the Qing Dynasty.” The road from the entrance of Desheng
Street to Yonglien Temple used to be the place where vendors carried their
cargoes to the market. The Sanmin Road at the street entrance used to be a river
where there are aquatic creatures, such as paradise fish and crabs. There was a
beautiful stone bridge spanning the river. In the old days, porters carrying
heavy cargos would walk on the dirt road. In raining days, it was inconvenient
for them to walk on the muddy road. Therefore, flagstone was paved on the road
to facilitate walking. The street was called “stone road” at the time where
people could get massaged as they walked by.

8. Luzhou Entrance
to the Temple
Luzhou Night Market is located in New
Taipei City Luzhou District. In the Qing Dynasty, vendors have gathered at
Yonglien Temple in the district to develop a traditional market. The temple has
been overhauled for four times and become the religious center of local
residents in Luzhou. Luzhou night market is located at the crossroads between
Desheng Street and Chengkung Road. There are many vendors in the night market,
and it is popular among local residents. The night market is mainly located on
Chengkung Road and Desheng Street where there are many stores and vendors at
two sides. The center of the night market is Yonglien Temple in Luzhou, which
is very popular. At present, “New Taipei City Luzhou District Association for
Promotion of Business District” is responsible for maintenance of environmental
hygiene and holding activities. The center of Luzhou Business District is the
popular Yonglien Temple. Therefore, the business district is also called
Yonglien Temple Night Market. There are many ancient houses, old stores, and
famous vendors gathering on the street. It is the life bazaar of local
residents. The market is opened in the morning, at the noon, and in the
evening. In the morning, it is a traditional market providing residents with
abundant fresh food and daily necessities. At the noon and in the evening, it becomes
a place where general public go shopping and dining. In recent years, under the
guidance of Department of Commerce, Ministry of Economic Affairs, the business
district has been reformed to accentuate its own characteristics. Moreover,

impression. The business district is an important place of traditional cuisine
where many local snacks, such as soft tofu, meatballs, noodles, lou mei,
glutinous rice balls, etc. lasting for generations are gathered. Because
traditional snack Qie-a Noodle originates form Luzhou, there are many Qie-a
Noodle stores here.
9. Jiuchiong Temple
More than three hundred years ago, Jiuchiong
Temple was built. It is said that during the reign of Yongli in the end of Ming
Dynasty, Cheng-gong Zheng came to Taiwan to send a punitive expedition against
Netherland army. When his troop stopped by Luzhou, they buried a large number
of arms in the west of Luzhou Central Road. Moreover, they also planted a Jiuchiong
tree as a mark. Afterwards, the resident in Luzhou started to worship the tree
in memory of the troop’s success, and the Jiuchiong Temple was built. Although
Jiuchiong Temple does not occupy a large area, Danshui River is in its south,
Guanyin Mountain is in its north and the scenery is very beautiful. The tree
used to be very large and it required two people to stretch their arms to
encircle it. However, it fell down thrice due to insect problem and weather.
Even though the fourth generation of the tree looks normal, it prosperously
survives and many believers hang red cloth on it to develop a unique scene. For
road widening, the tree is left in the center of road for maintenance of
tradition. Although it seems to be the most adequate solution, the issue is
still worth of investigation. The shape of the area of Jiuchiong Temple looks
like a olive, and there is a monument reads “ancient historic monument” in
front of it.
