TNR Preparation Conference (1)

1. Time: January 4th 2011

2. Theme: discussing TNR in communities with TUAPA

3. Content:

Yu Jie: Today we are going to inquire Brother Mautou that whether TUAPA could go to communities to carry out TNR activity? There are a lot of stray dogs and cats in our community. If they are not neutered, the stray dogs and cats would reproduce generations after generations.

Brother Mautou: no problem! In TUAPA, we have prepared registration forms and announcements. Will you please advertise the information and submit the data which you obtained to TUAPA. We will contact them by phone.

You Ming: When (how old) could the cat and dog be neutered?

Brother Mautou: the female dog or cat could be neutered one month post partum. Stray dogs above four months or house dogs above six months could be neutered. Please specify its gender and whether it is a dog or cat. Give us all the information.

Wei Yuan: could we apply for ligation on half of dogs and cats from any places?

Brother Mautou: in principle, we hope that the animals come from the same area; in this way the effect of TNR would be shown. Moreover, one area might need many times of litigation operations before the effect appears.

Yu Jie: could you perform the ligation surgery in our school?

Brother Mautou: yes. We will disinfect the site completely after we performed operations. The site would be cleaner than before. Please do not worry about sanitary problems.

Yu Jie: we will distribute the message. Please remember to send the registration forms to us via EMAIL.

 Brother Mautou: ok.

  Yu Jie: thank you!

Yu Jie:

Brother Mautou has mailed the registration forms to You Ming. I’ve also visited TUAPA’s website to download matters needing attention during neutering. Tomorrow I would give these files to the village head when we visit him.

1. We would discuss with the village head about matters needing attention concerning animals’ free litigation surgery.

       (1) After we sent basic information to TUAPA, TUAPA would contact the pet owners and arrange the schedule for neutering.

       (2) We’ve predetermined that the ligation surgery site would be atDaSing Elementary School. We would invite pet owners here and carry out neutering surgery according to schedule.

       (3) Please refer to TUAPA’s ligation descriptions for matters needing attention about the operation.

       (4) When filling in the form, each animal should occupy only one blank. In this way, the forms could be appropriately treated.

       (5) Neutering an animal need a lot of vets and volunteers. So the owners who have registered should come according to the schedule, in order not to waste the opportunity or make these personnel run a fruitless errand.

       (6) We would tell them the telephone numbers of responsible contact pupils, in order to facilitate applicants to inquiry.

If anyone encounters any difficult problems, he / she could call the teacher at 0931-58xxxx

Zhi Lun:

Yesterday afternoon, Yu Mei and I went to arrange the visit time with the village heads. We also checked where we could put up posters. Our recommendations are listed as follows:

2. Places for posters:

(1): Large posters could be put up to the village’s bulletin boards.

(2): Medium-size posters could be put up to the bulletin boards in the village head’s office, nearby shops, or crowded places.

(3) Small posters could be delivered to people who have dogs or cats in the community.

3 Time for putting up posters: 8:30 ~ 11:30am on January 30th

We shall assemble at school, and then we will set out together with tools including tape, paste, camera, and posters. We must remember to take records.

Wen Han:

We decided the content of the posters in the meeting. The time is too limited that I must make all the posters today, and then we could have time for sending them to activity groups who would put up and deliver them.

At first, I didn’t know which software I could use to make the posters. I found the software with a lot of effort, and finished the first edition of the poster. However, after consulting with the teacher, she thought that the characters were too small to attract people, and she also would like to write a subheading as our vision, so we modified the edition. The teacher and I discussed in the e-mail repeatedly, and finally got it done.

The next day, all the large, medium-size, and small posters are printed. Now it’s the time for combining a super poster. Wan Jun and Yan Ping put the four parts of a colorful poster into a huge one. The procedures are: first we cut off the white borders of the four parts, and then we stick the four parts together. Fortunately the work is finished corporately by all of us, or it won’t be done within the time limit.

Sheng Wei:

The first stop was the school gate. We immediately encountered a discouraging difficulty. The bulletin board was too high. We took a chair and all pitched in, soon we finished the work. We also put up posters to the breakfast shop opposite to our school, the bulletin board at the temple, the breakfast shop atFanhua Road, the bulletin board in Waipu village, and the bulletin board in Waizhong village. Usually, there would be many people there, but we also asked the bosses to help advertise.

Yu Jie:

We distributed our leaflets door to door inWaipu Village. At first, we met with a lot of refuses, because people said it was not necessary to neuter male dogs, or they could be kept in the cage. There were no replies fromWaipu Village, while there were many people encouraging and promising us inDalun Village. We also met a family which made us unhappy: they thought that we were running wild, so they drove us away. Although we were unhappy, we had to leave because we could not conflict with them. Some people were unfriendly to us, while others were kind and said, “You are only pupils but you are doing a good thing! Great!” Some people even invited us to drink, so as to give us energy to continue. Up till now, there are 10 dogs inWaizhong Village need to be neutered. I hope that more people would come to sign up, because I am the team leader, and I should have a good "performance". Ha~

You Ming:

All the groups worked very hard during the winter vacation. At present, our most important action is to carry out the free ligation in communities. Because after the activity group advertised in communities, there were a few applicants, so some group members suggested that we could advertise in all the classes. In this way, younger pupils could spread the news. In addition, some group members found that although there were many dogs in some places, there were no applicants there. We could try again there. This weekend, the activity group could visit those places first. And this time, we should invite our teacher to accompany us, to explain to misunderstood villagers that we were not playing. We would go with our teacher to visit those people and try to produce better results.

After discussions, the work is assigned as follows:

 (1) On February 19th, we would go to all the classes to publicize. About on February 24th, we would go to all the classes to take back the application forms.

Grade 1: Yu Jie, Wen Han, and Yu Fen

Grade 2: Jia Jun, Wei Xuan, and Yi Jing

Grade 3: Zhi Lun, Fang Yu, andPei Ru

Grade 4: Wei Yuan, Ying Jun, and Cheng Wei

Grade 5: Sheng Wei, Wan Jun, and Yan Ping

Grade 6: Ke Jie, Wen Shuai, and You Ming

(2) We would hand in the applicant files about free ligation of animals to Wei Xuan, who would type them into electronic files according to the classification of villages. ON February 25th, the files would be submitted to Brother Mautou in TUAPA.

(3) At 8:30am on February 20th Zhi Lun, Yu Jie, Ke Jie, and Jia Jun would gather at the school gate and strike again, -- visiting the family opposite to our school, the garage, and the kindergarten.

The Second Wave of Community Propaganda for Neutering Dogs and Cats for Free—Visiting

1. Time: February 23th 2011

2. Theme: visiting certain objects who own dogs and cats needed to be neutered in communities

3. Content:

Yu Jie:

This afternoon, the activity group plans to visit the owners whom we have never met. And we will visit the village head to collect the application forms.

The first stop: the family opposite our school

We walked to the house opposite to our school, because he raised a female dog, we often saw it become pregnant and give birth to puppies. Although we visited that family a few times, they never stayed at home. Our teacher talked with the people in the beauty salon at next door and knew that during daytime, the family would go out to do business, so they were not at home. The salon owner promised to ask the owner’s opinion for us.

The second stop: Yuanzhong Village head’s home

Next we went to the Yuanzhong Village head’s home. Although we pushed the doorbell again and again, no one answered. It seemed that the head was not at home. We had to ask the volunteering mother who lived next door to collect the application forms from the village head on behalf of us. When she sent her child to school tomorrow morning, she could give the forms to us. Thanks to the kindhearted volunteering mother who managed books helped us, or we would have to come again.

The third stop:Waipu Village head’s home

The head of Waipu Village is not at home, either. He was working in the field. His daughter gave him a call. And he said that there was only one applicant. So we noted down the phone number of that applicant. When we went back to school, we would contact him.

The third stop: the bamboo grove

The head of Waipu Village once told us a bamboo grove. Today the teacher and we decided to go and find it. Jia Jun knew about the approximate position of that place, but no one had been here, so we are not very confident. We could have a try. When the car turned into a path which was narrower and narrower, we were very nervous. Finally, we saw a bamboo forest, in it there was a three-side courtyard. The grass around it was very high to the extent that we could almost not see the way in. We didn’t know whether this was the right place. The teacher stopped the car on the road. When we stepped off, we heard a lot of dogs barking. Now we were sure that this was what we're looking for. When we went in, we saw a great pile of bones and food waste. Although the dogs kept barking, nobody came out, so we judged that the owner was not at home. When we looking into the yard, we saw two dogs were tied at the gate, and another dog rushed out, but it saw that there were so many of us; it dare not approach.

We looked around and found a plate on the tree at the entrance, the master wrote that: don’t abandon dogs at will. Dogs are our most loyal friends ... What the village head said about this owner was right. Some villagers abandoned their dogs here. So the owner wrote this sign to advice people who released their pets. The teacher put her phone number on the leaflet and wished him to contact us. Maybe we could help him. We put some leaflets about neutering dogs and cats for free on the pot cover, and also put one leaflet on the tree, pinned by a stone. We thought that he would see them and hoped that he would contact us.

The activity group followed the teacher to publicize out of school today, but we didn’t see the responsible persons. All of our activities were targeted to neuter dogs and cats, and we hope that there would not be numerous newly born puppies.

The Second Wave of Community Propaganda for Neutering Dogs and Cats for Free—Confirming the Surgery with Owners

1. Time: February 23th 2011

2. Theme: we would call owners again to confirm matters needing attention about the surgery

3. Content:

Yu Jie:

After we went back to school, my teacher and I began to call applicants one by one to confirm whether the owners knew about the matters needing attention about neutering dogs and cats for free. When we called them, some said that they would not participate, because some family members were object to the ligation. Of course we could not force them to accept. There was a gentleman who got the news from the internet, and called us to register. He enlisted some stray cats and he also said that he would borrow the cage trap to capture more cats to accept ligation. We were very happy to hear that. The working team had transmitted the news to other villages and towns, and the people there asked us to sign up! We had confirmed 24 applicants. We would continue to contact other applicants tomorrow.

Review of the Propaganda Activity about Neutering Dogs and Cats for Free

1. Time: February 25th 2011

2. Theme: review of the propaganda activity about neutering dogs and cats for free

3. Content:

Yu Mei:

In the process of propaganda, we encountered some difficulties:

1. Dogs were shut in, so ligation was not necessary. (However, we observed that some dogs would be released when they needed to piss or relieve the bowels.)

2. During the ligation, dogs would suffer from pain and bark. It was too cruel. (Zhi Lun explained that during the ligation, dogs would be interjected anesthesia needle, but some owners still refused.)

3. Ligation was not necessary for male dogs.

4. A grandma even asked Zhi Lun and me to take her dog to have the ligation surgery and then release it.

5. There was a gentleman whose feet are not convenient; he couldn't bring his dog (Shih -Tzu) to the ligation site. Zhi Lun and I were trying to figure it out.

6. The registration forms collected by classes in our school concentrated in the lower grades: one in Grade 1, one in Grade 2, and two in Grade 3.

I thought that we were trying to help living beings. Why couldn’t they understand our intentions? Neutering cats and dogs is a kind deed which could make the animals healthier. Some people even said that we are running wild, I thought he was so bad ~ But I also believed that as long as we keep communicating with him, he would understand the importance of life.

You Ming:

The difficulties faced by the activity group in the advocacy process are rooted in the fact that residents did not have the correct idea for treating animals. We should make a self-criticism that could we find a better method? The community residents did not understand ligation process very well. In the future, we could explain about the benefits they could get from neutering dogs and cats. In this way, maybe it would be possible for us to increase their confidence. We would ask pupils in the caring group to find relevant data.

Benefits from neutering pets

Spring is the estrous period for all animals. Dogs are not exceptional. If you feel that pets’ estrus is troublesome, the fundamental way is to take your pet to the pet hospital and have the ligation operation.

To carry out the ligation operation, owners should first contact with vets, and know about the matters needing attention before operation. Females’ best operation opportune moment is before the first estrous period. This could reduce the incidence of breast tumor. Ligation for males must consider the situation of the genital growth. If the operation was carried out too early, urinary problems were prone to occur. It is suggested that after one year old, the males could be neutered. In addition, at the end of the operation, the owners should accompany the pet more so as to comfort its emotion.

(1) Prevention and treatment of diseases: carrying out ligation operation for dogs could avoid the risks of getting pregnant when your pets just go out for a walk, and could also prevent certain diseases. Before females accept the ligation operation, they are inclined to suffer from some common severe pathology, such as pyometra, endometriosis, ovarian cyst, etc. After males accept the ligation operation, they could avoid problems such as prostate enlargement, testicular tumor and so on.

(2) Completely solving the problem of oestrus: most oestrus behavior appears on males. Although males won’t get pregnant, but they will have oestrus behaviors, such like being eager to go out for mating, being more impulsive, fighting with other dogs, destroying furniture, make mating actions in front of people, etc. In short, when a dog is in the estrous period, its characters will completely change. It will make troubles everywhere and makes you exhausted.

(3) The safe ligation operation: to neuter your dog safely, first you have to find a vet in a professional animal hospital to carry out the surgery. Neutering females would remove the uterus and ovary completely; while for males, the orchidectomy needs to be carried out. It sounds a bit scary, but the operation process is safe. Usually, the dog needs only 3 days to completely recover after the operation.
