Searching and organizing information about TSA

Description

Before designing the questionnaire and the interview, we had to recognize the research theme. We searched for the information related to Taipei Songshan Airport online and organized the data. When searching for the information, we were uncertain about the precision and had to compare them with some official websites and modified them. Thus, we not only checked the history of Taipei Songshan Airport, but also absorbed the location and the reasons of the foundation of the airport. We learned more about Taipei SongShan Airport.

Problem & Problem Shooting

It was not easy to find the information we need. Sometimes we couldn’t download the photos even we had found them.

Designing questionnaires

Description

In order to interview or investigate the related people, we prepared some items and questionnaires. The teacher asked us to design the questionnaire. I was in the same group with Bing-hsuan Chuang. We designed the questionnaire for the airport passengers and others established the questionnaire for community residents. After finishing the draft and designing the items, we started reviewing and discussing them. By brainstorming and reviewing the related data, we finally finished the questionnaire. Although it was not easy, we still accomplished it.

Problem & Problem Shooting

Sometimes we had no idea about the type of questions. However, after we searched on the Internet and we finally got some idea.

Designing and discussing interview items

Description

Today, we designed the items to interview the Deputy Director of the airport, the volunteer and the stores. At the beginning, we could not come out with the ideas and some items were awkward after being typed out. Thus, we finished the typing after discussion. When designing and discussing the questionnaires, we were often stuck and had to search for information on line. Everyone had different ideas and we sometimes disputed! After reviewing the data, we finally solved the problems and finished the items.

Problem & Problem Shooting

When we couldn’t come out the questions, we discussed it over and over.

Interviewing Deputy Director of TSA, a volunteer and Head of borough

Description

In order to learn the history of Taipei Songshan Airport, we interviewed the Deputy Director of the airport, the volunteer and the head of Fujing Borough.
Through the interview, we realized that Taipei Songshan Airport compensated the residents according to the effects on the residents’ lives. The volunteer actively inquired the passengers’ needs for help. Our interview in Taipei Songshan Airport today is shown below:

  • 1. We interviewed the Deputy Director to probe into the past, present and prospect of Taipei Songshan Airport.
  • 2. We interviewed the volunteer to find why he became the volunteer, what his jobs were and what made him happy.
  • 3. We interviewed the head of Fu-jing Neighborhood and realized that the impact of the airport in the neighborhood was insignificant. We learned the properties of the passengers and residents’ expectation of the airport.

Interviewing Head of Minfu Borough & distributing questionnaires

    Description

On Saturday, we interviewed the head of Minfu Borough, and conducted survey with the teacher. In the interview with Ms. Gu, she suggested that the government should support the installation of sound insulation windows with more funds. Besides, the residents can move to other districts to reduce the negative impacts on life. When interviewing the residents, I found that some elderly only understood Taiwanese. I would try to solve the problem once I couldn’t communicate with them in Taiwanese. In Ronghsing Garden Community, most of the residents were the elderly. The interview was more difficult since they did not understand Mandarin and they were illiterate. We should spend more time on the explanation. In the interview, regarding the airport, most of the residents suggested the abolishment due to the noise. However, many young parents opposed it and they suggested that it was convenient for their travelling with the airport. Thus, there were pros and cons.

    Problem & Problem Shooting

I think residents in Minfu community are nicer than those in Minsheng Community.

We then took the bus to Ronghsing Garden Community and interviewed the residents’ opinions toward Taipei Songshan Airport. Many people exercised there and we obtained almost 30 copies of questionnaire. Some people were willing to help us and some refused.

    Description

We went to Taipei Songshan Airport to interview the passengers and often encountered the people and foreigners who refused. We met the Japanese the most frequently. Sometimes people actively filled in the questionnaires and sometimes they helped us even though they were reluctant. Those with the free time would fill in the questionnaires and we did not force the people who did not have time.

    Problem & Problem Shooting

When we met foreigners, we felt shy because of language barrier.

Distributing questionnaires to passengers at TSA

    Description

In order to investigate the passengers’ satisfaction with Taipei Songshang Airport, we conducted the questionnaire survey in the airport on Saturday. At the beginning, we were too shy to ask the passengers and needed the help from the teacher. When I did the survey for the first time, the passenger even encouraged me which made me to feel confident. We interviewed many passengers and most of my interviewees were Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese. Due to the bad weather, the fights were mostly delayed. The passengers were extremely impatient! Although we tended to be rejected at the beginning, the investigation went easier at last. According to the passengers, Taipei Songshang Airport is clean and satisfying. However, most of the passengers of international flights were in a rush and did not have the time to fill in the questionnaire. We met a professor who had the knowledge about the airport and suggested us to design the items with more details. Finally, we had interviewed most of the passengers on site, and then waited for the next group of passengers to start the interview again. With the group members’ help and efforts, we finally finished the survey.

    Problem & Problem Shooting

Sometime we couldn’t recognize who was from local and who was from other countries. And sometime we have been rejected even before we asked them to fill out the questionnaires.

We interviewed Mr. Tang, the Head of the Neighborhood in Jingzhong Neighborhood Office and Mr. Tang told us about his experience. For instance, when he participated in Taipei Forum, he shared his opinion regarding the existence of Taipei Songshang Airport. In fact, residents of Ching-chung Neighborhood intended to save Taipei Songshang Airport. According to Mr. Tang, there must be an airport in the capital and the airport should not be abolished. Mr. Tang shared the history of Taipei Songshang Airport and the evolution of the neighborhood with us. We did not realize that two hours had passed! We then went back home instead of conducting the survey in Taipei Songshang Airport. What Mr. Tang had shared with us enhanced our report.

I simply changed the content and it went well. However, I needed the teacher’s help due to my slow typing speed. While I shared the experience, the teacher listened to me and keyed in what I had said. The teacher also inspired me with some suggestions. I finished the report finally. It was interesting to write the self-introduction! I could put my photos, and present my favorites. I also introduced my basic information, such as birthday, the star signs, and family members. The teacher required 150 words and I finished them right away.

Interviewing the Head of Zhuangjing Borough & distributing questionnaires

    Description

Before visiting the Head of Zhuangjing Borough, we conducted the questionnaire survey in the airport. I realized that it was more difficult to investigate international flights than domestic flights since the passengers of international flights were mostly the foreigners and the language was the obstacle. In the questionnaire survey, we kept running into Mainland Chinese passengers. We did not encounter the same situation next time. The reason is probably the increase of Mainland Chinese tourists. In order to learn the opinions of the residents in the neighborhood of the airport toward the improvement of noise and compensation, we visited the Head of the Borough in his office. Since the residents might be used to the sound of engine of the airplanes, the Head of the Neighborhood suggested that most of the residents did not complain and she was satisfied with Taipei Songshan Airport. She said that the people complained before; however, after her appeal to the airport, there was the improvement and the complaints were less!

It took a lot of time to ask question by question.

Share the experience of interviewing and distributing questionnaires

    Description

Not everyone could participate in the questionnaire survey and interview. After the teacher shared our different experiences, I realized that we shared some common points in different opinions. Experience sharing was good for learning. We could learn more knowledge. The opinion of Jie-ru Li impressed me the most since I shared the same. The Head of Chuang-ching Neighborhood suggested that “the effect was insignificant”. According to the classmates who conducted the questionnaire survey, the passengers of international flights were willing to help since they spent more time waiting. I met a Japanese passenger and I interviewed him with the English questionnaire. He spent a long time, and finally finished the questionnaire. Besides, I ran into a blond lady who was buying the souvenirs. I talked to her with simple English sentences and then gave her the English questionnaire. She helped me finish it. The foreigners were friendlier to me. Some classmates encountered the difficulty when interviewing the passengers of international flights since some of the passengers arrived at the airport for the first time, and had no idea about the questionnaire. In addition, sometimes the accents of the Mainland Chinese passengers were confusing, and it was easier to approach the passengers of domestic flights. There were more domestic flights than international ones. Thus, the interviewees of domestic flights would be more. When we conducted the questionnaire survey on the residents, most of the residents passed by in a rush and did not have time to fill in the questionnaires. Therefore, we prepared some gifts and attracted the passerby by the posters. Some of them were willing to help and our efforts were worth it. As to the interview with the heads of neighborhood, because of the concern about their voters, they were sometimes more conservative. Nowadays, the voice of opposition certainly exists.

    Problem & Problem Shooting

When we were conducting the questionnaire survey, I was nervious about that I would be rejected. But when I saw other fellows worked so hard that I encourage myself to do my best as well. The more questionnaires I distributed, the less pressure I felt. I think I’m used to it now and I believe I can finish them all.

    Distributing questionnaires to residents

    Description

On Saturday, we conducted questionnaire survey in the market near Min Quan Primary School. The day was cold and we were less motivated. People kept rejecting us and our posters were even blown away. We were divided into two groups and I was in the same group with Teacher Huang. We had posters and gifts, and drew people’s attention by the “posters”. However, due to the senior’s carelessness, the posters were blown away and fell into a pond. The interview was more successful than last time. Although some people rejected us, there were more people filing in the questionnaires. Many kind interviewees did not take the gifts. We then conducted questionnaire survey in Fu-ching Park and I was in the same group with Teacher Shuai. I found that the poster was effective. We produced nearly 40 copies and enjoyed it.
On Sunday, only a senior and I showed up and others were absent due to different reasons. We conducted questionnaire survey in Keelung Riverside Park and interviewed the residents exercising in the morning. We also interviewed the people on Fuyuan Street. However, since we had the “measure of poster”, we obtained the highest score this time, among the questionnaire surveys I participated in.

    Problem & Problem Shooting

Our poster did attract some people. However, sometime we were still rejected.

Lecture of the past of TSA and the history of Taiwan

    Description

Today, Teacher Huang invited the teacher of social studies subject, Teacher Hsiu-yu Lin, to tell us about the past of Taipei Songshan Airport and the reasons of its rise and fall. The teacher also taught us the effects of transportation, politics and economy in Taiwan on the passengers and flights in the airports. Teacher Lin explained to us with many videos and documents. We made the notes while listening to the teacher’s explanation of the videos. We recognized the key points neglected in the data organized by ourselves. The introduction of Teacher Lin was in detail and easy to understand. The data I organized were inferior to the notes and there was really a big difference!

    Description

After the interview on the street, we had to organize the statistics. We realized that everyone preferred interviewing the females who were seemingly more kind. Most of the passengers took the planes for tours. The Taiwanese people do not like to travel in groups, probably because there is more freedom in self-guided tours. By traveling in groups, they can only visit the spots planned and cannot stay in the same place for long. The passengers were satisfied with Taipei Songshan Airport. However, due to noise and air pollution, most of the residents in the neighborhood expected the abolishment of Taipei Songshan Airport.

    Problem & Problem Shooting

The most difficult part for today’s task was interviewees’ handwritings. However, we discussed together to figure out their answers.

I realized that without copying the data properly in advance, it would be difficult to type them out and sometimes I was confused! By the reorganization of the data, I fully learned the history of Taipei SongShan Airport. For instance, what are the competitors of Taipei SongShan Airport? Why did the airport decline? Fortunately, the words typed out were not as many as I imagined. The data reorganization could enhance our understanding.
