In recent
years, local people started to realize that natural resources
could be lost. Since the opening of Maolin National Scenic Area,
the area has drawn thousands of tourists and consequently
suffered damage to the environment. The damage
was particularly threatening to some species of butterflies.
Learning the facts, local people have voluntarily joined
butterfly conservatory associations, sponsored research and
taken action to protect and restore local habitats, limiting
entrance by way of reservation.
