(Reported by Xue-song, Yu-yang and Wei-jun)

Q: Introduce Jiu-Cheng(Old Castle) Cultural Association in brief, Please.

A:It was created in 1994. Due to the association consisted of teachers of Da-Yi Junior High School, it was named originally “Da-Yi Literature and History Workroom,” which aims at research and collection of Local Study. In 1996, the high auspices in the community attracts more members, and it is the main reason of modifying its’ name to “Jiu-Cheng(Old Castle) Cultural Association.”

The first president was teacher Liang who had been concentrated on historic teaching for several years and promoted education of local study. At present, the association keeps on not only collecting local study but joining cultural communication of other cities. More importantly, we hope the sapling fall in love with the city they live.

Q:When was the time you started to do research about this area – Zuoying?

A: There are two answers to the question. Firstable, I concern the place where I live near by Cheng Huang Temle and take a walk daily around the Lotus Lake. It is different from urban feeling in life type and custom, and it has its unique value. Secondable, I have yearned to know more about the place since I hone back to my hometown after I graduated.

Q: What are the main products in Zuoying?

A: Zuoying is the courthouse where is the chief city of military and business. After Chien Lung period of Ching Dynasty, the courthouse was moved to FongShan City, and most farmers and a few rich people began to left Zuoying, of course there were still some rich people living here. Rice, water caltrop and vegetables are the main kind of plants. While Japanese Occupation Era was the golend period because naval ports were built in Zuoying that brought more serviceman and many military villages. It is also a urban Sub-center that attracts people from other towns. Bussiness decays since the road plans were finished and it's convenient to go to downtown for shopping. As for the tourism, the most famous spot used to be Lotus Pond, but nowadays, the stay of tourists is short and most people cme here just for religious activities. Therefore, we hope that with our effort, we can reappear tourism by popularizing features of Zuoying.

Q: How many historical residences are there in Zuoying and roughly locations?

A:There are more than 200 buildings now. According to statistics, there are 2000 historical residences in Ching Dynasty and and 1000 in Japanese Occupation Era. Historical residences of Zuoying are distribute over between Lotus Pond and Zuoying Main Road. Over the road, only Syue's Old Residence is more complete with a large scale.

Q: What is the condition of historical residences preservation, and the attitude of residents?

A:At present, the standard in classfying historical spots is to see single building. However, trere is also building groups like Zuoying old settlements, which is worhty and should be preserved. Unfortunately, Kaohsiung City Goverment rejects conception of constructing Local Museum and Cultural Museum about historical residences area. Historical spots is our cultural property.

Reflection:

Thank for Professor Tseng who is obliging and decent. Especially, he guides us to visit historical residences in person and provides us with a lot of precious information.
