Bamboos

II. Siraya Culture and Bamboo Festival
1. How It Gets Started
Kou-pi, a typical village of
the Siraya Tribe, is located in the eastern part of Sin-hua
and adjacent to Chung-hsin Forest Station. Many residents
of Kou-pi live on bamboos. In 1999, Siraya Culture Association
was also set up here.
|
Although Kou-pi is far away from
the cities, the residents here never lose their passion for
their own culture and are dedicated to the reconstruction of
Siraya culture as well as the conservation of natural resources.
In view of the recession of the local industry and the problem
of brain draining, the association thus has planned a series
of “Siraya Culture and Bamboo Festival,” a combination of cultural
reconstruction and local industry, expecting to “bring this
place back to life” through the promotion of the whole community. |
|
2. Significance of the Totem
The postal design preserves the Siraya
traditional geometry: the contrast of red, black, and white,
a symbol of blazing passion. The mystery of the night drops
a hint of the declining tribe and reveals their mild sadness
and tender yearning for the past. The dimly light from the crescent
moon represents the regaining power and their expectation.

3. The Activity
“Siraya Culture and Bamboo Festival” has included a series
of activities related to “bamboos,” such as the sketch contest
“Ecology of Bamboos” held in Sin-hua Forest Station, “Touring
the Bamboo Gardens” provided by the community bamboo farmers;
the display of the hand-made bamboo toys like the water
guns, tops, and bamboo dragonflies at the Culture Square
in front of the Kou-pi Church; the exhibition of the bamboo
instrument sculptures with no marks made by machines and
the bamboo woven work; the worship with sincerity and the
sacrifice with bamboos; the bamboo firecrackers for welcoming
guests; the show of “Siraya Culture and Bamboo Festival,”
and last but not least, the local “delicious bamboo shoot
meal.” Even if you can’t make it for a feast, you cannot
miss the big bowl of the bamboo shoot porridge.
