(二) Project Overview

1. Category: Local specialties

2. Our「Local specialties」:

The name of Paiwan Tribe was originated from contacts between the villagers and the outsiders. When they asked for the name of this place, the villagers replied: Fawan. Therefore, the outside world called the indigenous people as Paiwan Tribe. Old Fawan is the right place where the Paiwan Tribe contacted the outside world. It is also the origin place of North Paiwan Tribe. Here, there are a large amount of stories about their love and hate in the history. So there are plentiful of history relics and articles, but everything has gone past along with the village and the old. Let our children return this land and watch the slabstone houses; make a nose flute with the old, and follow up the ancestors’ traces in the mountain.

We hope the Old Home of Vuvu could be maintained forever.

3. Our major Project:

Fawan, a beautiful and attractive name!

In the deep green forest, a small bamboo raft anchors in the purling water. Vuvu is looking at the playing children near the riverside with a bamboo-made smoke pipe in his mouth. There are arrays of slabstone room reflecting the southland bright sun on the hillside, and the noise of cicada submerges the faint nose flute music. Such a situation remained unchanged for centuries, as the old Paiwan Village became gradually a dreamland isolated with the real world. In order not to let it become a remnant memory of the valley, many old people spared no efforts to work in the field. They only expected to take foot on the homeland and see the mountain forest hiding in the clouds. The next-generation in Paiwan Village showed little interest on this land. For this reason, we hope that this project can link the old Vuvu with the young, and activate their losing memory and skills.

4. Our Computer and Internet Access

The internet connection of our school is provided by the ADSL connection of Pingtung County Network Center, and we also have a computer room with 18 computers with new P-IV motherboard and new screens. Apart from the computer class, the students are also allowed to use the computers during other class times and lunch breaks. During the period of preparing for the Cyberfair, the team members all made good use of their lunch break and worked on the project

5. ?Problems We Had To Overcome

(1)Lack of computer software:

After having sought for assistance, the motherboards of the computers had been renewed, however, the computers all had no software but the basic word-processing software. Thus it was difficult to modify pictures, video clips and websites. Eventually, the teachers of the school provided the team with their personal software and a volunteer helper provided his personal computer to complete the task. We give them our sincere gratitude for their kindness.

(2)Learning how to do the project:

This is the third time that our school entered the competition. Although many of the teachers have the experience of entering the competition twice before, it is the first time for all the student team members. For them, it was a brand new experience. They decided on the topic after many meetings and reviewing past projects. The project was able to progress smoothly with the teachers’ assistance in contacting tribal chiefs, elders, historians, the village head, and church workers. Many efforts have been put in the audio recording, translating, video taping, photo taking, visiting, making notes, correcting the information, and many interviews had been done with the tribal chiefs, in the old tribal site, and on tribal legends. All the information we’ve got is the result of careful and repeated corrections.

(3)Gathering special information:

It has been 33 years since Paiwan Village moved from a remote mountain area to the riverbank of Niujiao Bay in 1974 due to the inconvenience in transportation and the education for the younger generation. No pictures, photos and literary documentary of the move, and very few people could recall the event. Most of the people have only heard about it. Lately, there have been some people in the tribe started to study the tribe’s history, however, the speed of information gathering was too slow to overpower the memory deterioration over time. The accuracy of information regarding historical events could only be sought after by hearing from more people and deleting conflicting stories, as well as stories breaching personal privacy. The translation of the conversation with the tribal elders and chief were done by teachers who were fluent in the tribal language. We also give our thanks to the assistance of Chief Hui-mei Hsiao of Paiwan Village.

  1. feeling:

Mr. Shih:

Old Fawan is actually like the cultural treasury map of North Paiwan Tribe, where there are lots of stories and relics for exploration, e.g. from the popular “Legend of Shooting the Suns” to the story of the nether world and ancestor. The old people could tell you many stories about local relics.
Only when you have visited the slabstone house of the Old Fawan could you know the deep correlation between the culture of the Paiwan Tribe and the slabstone houses. Everything in the tribe is closely linked. So, field visit could help us really understand the soul of the Paiwan Tribe Culture.
The New Fawan is linked closely with the Old Fawan. So there are a large amount of cultural treasures, e.g. a common Old Urn, which may be a valuable curiosity from Dutchman.

So, you may cherish the opportunity to visit here!

Mr. Tsai:

Hold fast to our dreams and meet the challenges in any activity. With this spirit, the most difficult thing can be readily solved. In this project, I found it difficult to stick to our plan, as demonstrated by the car traces all the way. Every student also made great efforts to make progress from the very start to the end. Besides, the villagers of the Tribe could feel our intention. Finally, every student was happy to claim: “We finish it, and we do it.

Mr. Cho:

The old slabstone houses attract our attentions, and the waterfall let everybody ponder!
“-Oh-Ah~~~ㄨ~~ㄨ~~ㄨ!”
Standing at the upper reach of the Old Paiwan (Paiuwam) Tribe, and looking far into the North Dawu Mt., you may recall the surroundings one century ago……
Since the senior high school, I had a mysterious fancy and deep passion to the Old Paiwan Tribe. When I participate in the Cyberfair, it is very lucks for me to see the Old and the three families of Seniors in the Paiwan Tribe. This could provide a further insight into the historic sources, Fiesta Ceremony and myth stories of the Old Paiwan.
Seven group members improved a lot in preparing report. Mr. Tsai, Director Shi and I have witnessed their progress; this is attributable to Cyberfair project!
At last, the teachers and children would like to share the treasury of the Old Paiwan with everybody.

STUDENT:

Yi-lin:Watching carefully is useful!

It is very glad to participate in the Cyberfair project again. Though I met many difficulties, I have learnt a lot of things. Joining this activity, we learned of the history and relics about the Paiwan Tribe and various tribes. We also experienced the life of tribal people in the past. I feel that only down-to-earth observation could help know more about the Tribe. This is a good opportunity for us. Finally, I hope we can get good results through our efforts.

Hui-ru:Walking through the dangerous path and going into the forest, I will never forget this!

Going across the dangerous roads and hills, I felt very tired. But, I found very interesting in this activity, since every time I could see Paiwan Tribe relics. I like this event. I remembered Mr. Tsai had told us: “something we’ve learned will not belong to the teacher, but for ourselves.” It is right! The things we learned actually belongs to ourselves, teachers just give us some instructions. I was deeply impressed by the words in this activity. Because of this activity, I know something in the past. Though this event was over very soon, I will keep the memories in my mind all the time.

Cheng-en:Something we learned would not belong to the teacher, but for ourselves!

After joining the Cyberfair project, I had an unexpected experience and met difficulty.
Although it is very tiring, I can learn more things from the activity. When I firstly made a note, I had no idea about it. The teachers then told us how to do it.
During the activity, we visited many places where I learned the historic source of the Old Paiwan, distribution and the stories and legends of Vuvu. Sometimes we had to climb over mountains, and walked across some dangerous roads just like an exciting and funny journey in Africa!
All the activities were over! Though I was tired, I learned many things not covered by the textbooks. I would like to share with everybody.

Hong-yu:I am tired, but I will insist on to the end!

The Cyberfair project for this semester will come to an end, the teachers worked diligently to make us know more about computer. Time runs very quickly!
After I joined the Cyberfair project, I found I learnt a lot from it. Sometimes, we went to the computer room to print what we have learned from the visit. As soon as the class was over, I found tired, went home and went to bed. So, mum asked if I would give up, I answered: No. I want to try my best to accomplish the visiting task.

Ting-jiang:Our first interview was unsuccessful, but we gradually got familiar to it.

At the first stage, we went to make some interviews on Wednesday, and entered into computer. I felt tired if I had no time to rest.
But there was some good time, it was so happy once the teacher told us to stay over in the Old Fawan. Vuvu Jin presented Fete for us, and yelled towards the Holy Mountain. He also played the nose flute for us. Vuvu Jin told us the sound of nose flute is from the hundred-foot snake. We talked about ghost stories in the night!
Although this is a painstaking course, it is worthy for us to learn more about our hometown.

Jia-rou:The Cyberfair project ended. This is my first time to join such an activity. I was excited about it, but I was afraid if I can finish my task.

Looking back at this activity, we visited chief Hsiao’s house for the first time. She prepared many candy for our interview. She told us the historical cause of the Old Paiwan. We went to chief Chen’s house, where we saw a pearl worth of 2 million. Why is the pearl so costly? It will fume when the sun irradiates it, so it is also called “fuming pearl”. When we visited chief Gao, she told us the identity of the indigenous people. Finally, we visited Elder Hsian-ren Jin, he taught us make the traditional musical instrument---nose flute and the improved one.
What impressed me most is staying over in the Old Fawan, we had a
traditional meal of the Paiwan; we talked and jested with each other at the front of the slabstone house of chief Hsiao. At that moment, we saw the moon climbing up from the mountainside just like the sunrise. I learnt more about our culture from this event!

Jia-rong

The Cyberfair project this year will come to an end. Though there was still some place we didn’t go, I have learnt much more.
Mum told me to insist on if I like this activity. Otherwise, we will get nothing.
When we entered the Old Tribe, we can understand why the people lived a difficult life. But, they had a rich mental life.

It is tiresome to join the Cyberfair project. But everybody tries the best to gain the championship; we expect to spread the stories and legends of the Paiwan Tribe over the whole world. Here I want to express my thanks to teachers for their efforts and help.
