(Teresa Teng's burial)

Passing

When we arrived at Teresa Teng's burial place, by chance we met a Japanese group of tourists who came to commemorate Teresa Teng. After the teacher had communicated with them in simple Japanese, we found out that there were also Taiwanese people in the group, who told us that they were also fond of Teresa Teng and had come specifically to visit this place. We heard from them that Teresa Teng was a top and very popular singer in Japan . We also introduced ourselves and our research, ¡§Teresa Teng's Sweet Past, by the Teng's Investigation Team¡¨, and took a group photo with them.

The letters of Teng's Garden was written by Mr. James Sung (political figure).

Scenes from the Burial Place

1. On Teresa Teng's gravestone, there is a figure of a woman holding her arms in a circle. The teacher had asked us to think about what it meant, and our answer was that it showed Teresa Teng embracing the love from the people.

2.The surrounding garden was gracefully adorned and on the trees there are many multicolored hanging butterflies.

3.  Upon entering, on the left is Teresa Teng's epitaph, which has inscribed over it her achievements in life. She is also admired by people for her patriotic personality.

4.In the center of the burial park was an object covered in green cloth, the teacher had said that it was a piano. Pity we could not see it.

5.The grass and the fences in the gardens looked special as they were cut into shapes of musical notes, which connected with Teresa Teng's musical talent.

6. Within the park Teresa Teng's songs could heard and it seemed to accompany us during our visit.

On the day, there were over 10 Japanese Tourist Groups that were visiting the park. During the 10 years after opening fans have continued to visit, and everyday flowers are placed. At present, the piano is undergoing maintenance that will only be completed next year.

Thoughts from Visit - 1 Wei-li Wu

We had gone to the topmost peak of Taiwan to visit Teresa Teng's burial park on ChinPoSan. We all thought Teresa Teng's grave was very pretty - there was a big piano and also a sculpture of her, but more significant were the musical notes arranged out of small tree trunks. It was unlike other burial grounds, more like a little park, and Teresa Teng's songs were playing inside. We had met Japanese people there, so in fact our Japanese friends also were very fond of her. We also took a photo with them ¡V it was my first photo with foreigners so it made me really happy!

Our Teng's Investigation Team also took photos ourselves. I want to thank the teachers that drove us there, and also Teachers Lai and Wu who accompanied us. It was really an enjoyable memory!

Thoughts from Visit - 2 Yi-cheng Yang

Today the Teng's Investigation Team and a few teachers had gone to ChinPoSan. Pity it was a rainy day, because when we climbed up the mountain we were all freezing. We met Japanese people right after arriving, who also were visiting Teng's Garden to see Teresa Teng, and we took a photo with them. We had left quickly later, because the wind and rains were heavy.

After leaving, the teacher took us to see the northernmost wind-powered generator station in Taiwan . We saw 5~6 windmills and their very thick pole, which could fit a person inside! Although the wind was strong and it was raining, but our trip today to ChinPoSan and the generator station, cold as it was, was a most memorable trip.

We took a photograph with the Japanese people we met by chance.

(A famous confectionary in Lujhou)

Long Feng Tang is a traditional confectionary in Lujhou. When Teresa Teng was young, she often came with her mother here to buy cakes!

¡»1. Why do you make the Teresa Cake?
On the tenth year after Teresa Teng died, in order to commemorate the fact that Lujhou had Teresa Teng, an international superstar, Mr. Lian-fu Yang of the Township Well-being Association found and worked with the owner, Long Feng Tang, to create the currently produced Teresa Cake, which was reproduced from a traditional cake and released with new packaging.

¡»2. How do you make the Teresa Cake?
By combining Long Feng Tang's traditional cakes with the sweet image of Teresa Teng, Teresa Cake is a sweet-tasting traditional cake.

The original flavor developed was pineapple-jelly, but presently there are five flavors, and in future, a salty flavor will also be developed. Teresa Teng has always given the impression of sweetness and charm, so the flavors of the Teresa Cake have focused on being sweet, but some customers have suggested adding a salty flavor, which will be considered in order to satisfy the consumers.

Making Process:
After softening the dough with your hands, the palm is used to flatten it (into a round shape), and after enveloping the contents it is pressed in the mould and removed in preparation for baking.

Before baking, it is brushed with egg, and after about 20 minutes of baking, it is ready for packaging.

¡»3. Do non-local fans of Teresa Teng come to buy them?
Both the local and non-local people buy them, especially Lujhou people, who will buy Teresa Cakes for gifts when going away.

¡»4. The naming of ¡§Teresa Cake¡¨:
Since the people of China regards Teresa Teng as equal to their leader, Deng Xiaoping, thus Teresa was used, as everyone could use it and it would not violate intellectual property rights.

¡»5. The love of China 's people for Teresa Teng:
Other than naming her Xiao Teng, in Guanzhou there is even a Teresa Teng memorial hall.

¡»6. The owner's suggestion for incorporating Teresa Teng with Lujhou:
Build a Teresa Teng theme park, musical garden or memorial halls etc.

Thoughts from Visit Ai-ting Wang

We did not go to Long Feng Tang to buy things to eat, but to learn more about the cake that commemorates Teresa Teng, called Teresa Cake. It was enjoyable: we also made the Teresa Cake with our hands! I was very delighted! The process was difficult, especially the part where you had to wrap the dough around the content, before pressing it in the mould! Then you knock, knock and knock! And our Teresa Cake took shape. The master was carefully instructing us to make them. While the cakes were being baked the owner of Long Feng Tang spoke to us about traditional practices concerning a newborn infant for the first 24 days, what to do for hair-cuts, and also what to say at weddings. After returning home, I shared the Teresa Cake with my grandparents and parents, who all said that it was delicious and made me really happy!

The tasty-smelling Teresa Cake comes out of the oven! Let's all have a taste!

¡»Q1: When did the Town Hall begin holding Teresa Teng Singing Competitions?

Last year Lujhou's Chi-hsien Lion Club's founding President had contacted the Town Hall to express their desire to co-host a ¡§Teresa Teng Singing Competition¡¨, therefore the event was held together with the Award Presentation for Model Mothers on the 7 th floor of the Town Hall.

¡»Q2: How long does a Teresa Teng Singing Competition Last?

About 2 to 3 months. The age groups of the participants were allocated into adolescents, adults and mothers, and applications were numerous.

¡»Q3: Were there any amusing or significant events in the past?

Some participants had really sounded like Teresa Teng, so if you did not see the face you would have though that Teresa Teng was there!

¡»Q4: Will there be another Teresa Teng Singing Competition?

At present, we have had no word from the Teresa Teng Foundation, but if it was to be done, we will give full cooperation.

¡»Q5: Do you think Teresa Teng has contributed in promoting Lujhou's tourism?

Obviously! It has been 10 years since Teresa Teng's death, yet every year many tourists from Hong Kong , China and Japan still visit here, and this has significantly helped with Lujhou's tourism industry

While the Town Hall was hosting the 2 nd Teresa Teng Singing Competition they also hosted a Teresa Teng exhibition.

Before the interview with the Mayor, we nervously practiced our questions.

¡»Q6: Do you think there is a possibility of constructing a Teresa Teng Memorial Hall?

Yes. The Teresa Teng Foundation and Teresa Teng's younger brother, Chang-his Teng, had both proposed this idea to the Town Hall, but due to problems with funding and location, we have been unable to realize it.

¡»Q7: Do you think there is a future possibility that Teresa Teng's former residence may be preserved or relocated?

Teresa Teng's former residence and the 53 veteran families currently residing in that area are all illegal occupants to the county government, so in future forced removal should occur, thus Teresa Teng's former residence will not kept and there is a greater possibility of relocation.

¡»Q8: Do you think Teresa Teng's former residence needs renovation or made into an area that stored and displayed her artifacts?

If in future it is successfully relocated, we would want to renovate and clean it up, and of course, the former residence can be used to store some of the artefacts for display, which can also include the objects inside the Lujhou Elementary School 's history room.

Conclusion

With this interview, we realized that Teresa Teng had massive appeal, whether to us the young students and teachers or even the Mayor, her voice is well-liked; some mothers are still her die-hard fans! It is not easy for Lujhou to have harbored this world-class superstar, and we as Lujhou people also feel proud. We hoped to make her spirit known through this event, so that everyone will remember her.

We want to thank Teacher Fan from 602 for accompanying us to the Town Hall. Teacher Fan was one of the coordinators for the 1 st Teresa Teng Singing Competition at Lujhou Elementary School .

The Mayor was very friendly and accepted our interview. He agreed to our suggestions for Teresa Teng's former residence and also provided encouragement for the Team's hard work.

Conclusion

Where there are Chinese people, the name Teresa Teng will be known. Taiwan has been honored with this internationally renowned superstar, thus after her death there are still many channels to commemorate and praise her achievements, whether at her burial park or in the various regions. Each year commemorating events or competitions have been held, and there has been a continuous stream of participants. Many of her songs to fame are still being sung this day, while the local confectionary industry in Lujhou had incorporated her name and used her image to create a local specialty. By listening, singing, speaking, eating and watching, we can continue to commemorate this famous female star, and through doing so, we can continue her hard-working spirit.
