Making Pottery in the U.S.A

John wasn’t very familiar with American’s way to live when he first arrived in America. His sister knows that John is interested in making potteries, so she cleaned a space out in the storeroom. She placed a table and a chair for John to make pottery. She has told his brother that he can make pottery in America, so John brought his tools of making pottery to America. When the tools were placed on the table, the space became John’s workroom.

John’s sister has shown John’s works to a pottery teacher. The teacher appreciated John’s works. John had been concentrating on making potteries after he got the clay. Later on, John and his sister went to a pottery class together. The teacher used English to teach the class. It made John unable to understand what the teacher is saying. Fortunately, John’s sister translated the key of what the teacher said.

The American teacher’s key points are similar to Taiwanese teachers. The teacher will do some examples first, and then the students will try to make one similar to the teacher’s. John’s doesn’t want to make the same thing as others make, so he usually makes a creative one by himself. The teacher often appreciates John’s works. For John’s sister, the teacher’s applause to her brother also makes her feel proud.
