[By Tsung-hsien Lin/ Changhua] Hsin-Yi Public Junior High and Elementary School of Changhua County has been honored with the International CyberFair Platinum Award from 2012 to 2015. Developing from last year’s The Dragon King has Nine Sons—Trace of Dragons in Changhua, this year a more creative idea, Trace of Dragons in Changhua-Meet the Dragon through Time was put forward.

Under the systematic guidance of teachers and parents, students from Hsin-Yi Elementary School have begun seeking advice from local seniors and culture and history workers, and going on field trips to Changhua Nanyao Temple, Yuan Ching Kuan, Lukang Longshan Temple, Lukang Mazu Templ, among others. As Principal Chien-wen Tsao put it, Chunghwa County is rich in culture and history, and students are able to know more about their hometown through the Cyberfair project with “Dragon” as the subject. History Teacher Wei-li Chen said, students can understand history outdoors beyond history textbooks, and those experiences will help them better understand the history of their hometown and pique their interest in the subject. The Xinyi Dragon Search Team has sought traces of dragon’s evolution in temples everywhere starting from Changhua and of its daily life in Taiwan, and visited Lukang, an important historic town of Changhua, for these traces in Dutch colonial rule period, Ming Zheng Period, Qing Dynasty, Japanese Occupation Period and the Period of Republic of China. On the way, students carefully listened to the guide and took notes while busy taking pictures, hoping that they would perform well in this year’s Cyberfair project.

Parents are an important source of support for the development of Hsin-Yi Cyberfair Club, because they not only encourage their children to practice diverse learning, but also support them in spending extra time collecting data and making web pages. It is often the case that all family members carry out field survey on holidays so as to learn and grow together. Moreover, parents always provided, based on their specialities, innovative advice in terms of subject, content, structure, and educational promotion on discussion meetings. For example, subject surrounding time-travel TV series and visiting Wu Family Dough Figurines Hall for educational promotion, which fully display a good teacher-student relationship. Principal Chien-wen Tsao said that Hsin-Yi students have grown up as they ascend from primary school to junior high school, and Hsin-Yi’s curriculum covers the range precisely. The dragon search trip has allowed students to investigate and understand in person the history of Changhua and enabled them a fresh learning experience.
