Research Motive

viii. Gaobinge Hotel

In our fifth grade social study class, we learned Japanese occupation history. There are many examples on how that period influences our life, language and architecture today, Chung Shan north classroom is one of them. On the PTS "Our Island-Tearing Down Historical Building" report, we learned that Gaobinge is Japanese colonial period building. It faced the crisis of demolition and endangered historical memories. The groups and residents protecting cultural heritages appealed to keep its existence. But we could not know when demolition will begin… As a result, many Japanese colonial period buildings are endangered.

We wanted to learn the history and usage situations of these buildings by conducting field studies. Furthermore, we would like to propose future plans on these idle sites, in the hope of revitalize their historical purposes.
