Reflections from the members—A challenge of stamina, endurance and brain

Ciao-yuan

This was my first time to attend the Cyberfair competition. Our theme was “butterfly”. We had prepared a lot for this competition and thought of lots of works related to butterflies. This was a great opportunity for me to learn more.
At first, the teacher explained how to make the carton book, which made me really confused. Fortunately, because of the weekly discussion and the assistance from the other team members, the carton book and story-telling had been done successfully. However, what impressed me most was origami. I was supposed to teach origami to the school brothers and sisters, but because of my poor memory I often forgot the steps. Thanked to my considerate team members for helping me complete this task.
At last, thanked to Ms. Lin, Ms. Huang and Mr. Fan for teaching and leading us, and all of the partners for making the carton book together. With everyone’s help, I acquired quite a few abilities.

Yi-hung

I felt so delighted to join the Cyberfair competition this time. The competition indeed took us much time and energy. During summer vacation, I kept surfing the internet and thinking of a good way to present the carton book story. When the school opened, the teacher asked us to use the carton book we made during vacation as a draft, and drew on the drawing paper to make a real carton book. Teacher said,” The carton book should be presented in concise words.” With the teacher’s instruction and reminder, we ultimately accomplished those three exquisite carton books. Before making the carton book, we had to collect a large amount of information, including the lifestyle and growth process of butterfly, nectar source plants, food plants, and so on.
Through this competition, I learned and gained a lot. Wish the result of our hard work would be appreciated.

I seldom had chance to participate in this kind of activity. I was so glad to get along with my team members in this period which was the happiest time for me in this semester.
I wanted to thank everyone for taking care of me and giving me a lot of warm. I learned the skills of making carton book as well as story-telling, and I also received the most precious friendship. Thanked to the teacher for offering me this opportunity to take part in this activity.

      Kai-tinga

It was great to attend the Cyberfair competition. Although I was the last member being chosen, my duties were not easy.
Because I was fond of exploring the nature and looking after the butterflies, and I also had the experience of taking care of Tirumala limniace and Idea leuconoe, the teacher assigned me the task of tracking down the butterflies in other butterfly ecological environments. I accepted the task with pleasure and completed it successfully.
I wanted to thank my parents for taking me to the Jinshi Lake, Maolin, and Nantou to visit the butterfly gardens, Ms. Lin for letting me know the Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden, Ms. Huang for teaching me to draw butterflies and make the carton book, and Mr. Fan for teaching me to take care of the larva. I learned a lot from this process. It was truly an impressive journey.

Teacher Pei-ru

In recent years, Cuei-Ping has been working on the building of ecological environment on campus. Not only did we apply for the funding from MOXA Foundation to set up a butterfly cage, but we also grew nectar source plants and food plants at every suitable corner to attract butterflies and caterpillars. Due to the hard work by all of the teachers and students, the ecological environment in Cuei-Ping became more and more plentiful which attracted a variety of butterflies to come and breed, forming a picturesque scene on Cuei-Ping campus.

Supported and recognized by parents (including the volunteers, students’ parents and the parents association), teachers (including the administrative and teaching staff) and students, the Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden had become a part of our campus. The activity of rearing butterflies made us care more about the issue of ecological environment and feel the beauty of nature as well. The process was full of surprises, and we saw the profoundness of nature from the butterflies’ transformation in their lives. The desire to protect and take care of the nature has kept growing stronger and stronger in our minds.

This year, we three teachers led the students to attend the Cyberfair again. We chose “Having fun with Butterflies,” an issue really close to our school environment as our research topic for the 2016 Cyberfair. Because of the activity this time, the teachers and students understood the butterfly ecology on campus more and discovered the volunteers’ devotion to environment maintenance in our community.

Teacher Ciu-min

Recalling back to three years ago, the Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden had just been established. I often went there with Director Pei-ru for weeding. It was during the butterfly breeding season then, so there were larvae, leaves, webs and rearing boxes everywhere in the Office of Academic Affairs. When break times, students flocked to the office to observe those butterflies and had heated discussion about their growing condition. Since these scenes had still been vivid in my mind, I decided to participate in the Cyberfair with my partners. We hoped to let our students learn more as well as care more about butterflies through this topic, and we shared this process with people.

During the process of students practically rearing butterflies, they fully realized the meaning of life inheritance from the transformation from eggs to adults. Through carton book making and story-telling, from content arrangement to information illustration, everyone tried their best and cooperated together to achieve the goal. When giving the story, the concentration of every child really gave the team members an immediate recognition.

Despite the fact that we didn’t have elaborate graphic records and abundant funds, we recorded every step we had taken with perseverance, trying to tell the story of the butterflies on our campus vividly. We hoped this theme would touch everyone’s heart and further arouse the love and caring toward this beautiful creature.

Teacher Cheng-yu

This was my first time leading students to rear butterflies. I found that students were not only naïve and full of energy, but they were also cautious and conscientious when taking care of the butterflies. As a matter of fact that there was a gorgeous butterfly garden on campus with fragrant trees and flowers and lovely butterflies inside, we had more opportunities to admire and observe their changes at times.

During butterfly rearing, every student paid much attention to the larvae. If the larvae died unfortunately, the student would also be really sad about it. As a result, in this process, students could experience both happiness and sadness so as to arouse their desire to build up habitat for the butterflies, which was what they couldn’t learn from the textbooks.

Wish this research project would make students care more about their surroundings and cherish those hard-earned natural treasures.
