Local environment issues

Local community

Kaohsiung city lies in southwestern Taiwan, which has become the combination of the original Kaohsiung city and Kaohsiung county of Taiwan province since December 25, 2010. The Kaohsiung city today is 2,947 square kilometers in area, being the widest municipality in Taiwan. Our living environment is near Nanzih Export Processing Zone and Tsoying Naval Base; therefore, the majority of residents in this region go in for technology and military. We have abundant community resources and nice environment such as Metropolitan Park, being known as the environmental hill, Houjin creek, which has become elegant after the adjustment, and dozens of temples, historical sites, and shopping districts. Additionally, with the convenient transportation system, Nanzih district has become one of the significant cores of industry and commerce in Northern Kaohsiung.

Being situated beside Hou-Jin Creek, closely next to Metropolitan Park, Cuei-Ping Junior High and Elementary School set up the butterfly garden in 2002. With the great ecological environment of our campus being formed as an ecological corridor with Hou-Jin Creek, Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden built an environment for butterflies to rest and reproduce. Furthermore, under the efforts of our teachers and students on promoting butterfly ecological education on campus, Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden has become a new paradise for butterflies.

Subject

Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden

Research project

The MOXA Foundation fully sponsored our school to establish the butterfly garden. There grew a variety of nectar source plants and food plants in the garden to breed the butterflies, so as to provide teaching materials and close observation. During the time when classes rearing caterpillars, teachers instructed students how to take care of those little creatures together and made the whole school get involved in the activity. We hoped that through the process of learning the lifestyles, reproduction, and living strategies of butterflies, every participant could understand the importance of environment to species, cultivate the concept of caring our surroundings, and also sow seeds of the conservation in Taiwan.

Our goal of this research project was to introduce our butterfly garden, our rearing experience, and some related activities we held so that more and more people would know Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden, and further arouse people’s consciousness of ecological conservation and learn more about butterfly ecology.

Research methods

This was a qualitative research. Our sources included books, documents, pictures, interviews, internet, and field survey.

Qualitative data: drawing an outline, designing questions, fieldwork, data collection (material references and interview records), data analysis, and the completion of the research project.

Learning objectives

Changes were happening on our campus. Due to the promotion of the butterfly ecological education and the introduction of butterfly rearing activities, students raised interests because of contacts, had an understanding because of involvements, and took actions because of being touched. When seeing butterflies, they could call out “It’s Idea leuconoe clara!”, “It’s Papilio demoleus Linnaeus!” or “It’s Pachliopta aristolochiae interposita!” instead of simply marveling “What a beautiful butterfly!” When seeing caterpillars, they would say “How adorable they are!” and no longer yelling “That’s horrible!” Through the butterfly ecological education, students could understand the importance of environment to species and cultivate their concepts of caring the surrounding.

We hoped to have a thorough understanding of the development, the ecological environment, and the transforming process of Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden via this research project “Having fun with Butterflies.” We hoped to know the living conditions of butterflies via field visits, and further call on people’s consciousness and actions of cherishing the butterfly ecology. Those were the motivations of  The Whispering of Butterflies Team to pick up this topic for the research project.

The four research purposes of this project:

1.Understand the development and transforming process of Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden. (Cognitive domain)

2.Investigate the environment of Cuei-Ping Butterfly Garden and the conditions of rearing butterflies. (Cognitive and psychomotor domains)

3.Promote the butterfly ecological education on campus through practical actions. (Cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains)

4.Arouse people’s environmental awareness to cherish the butterfly ecology. (Affective domain)

Computer equipment

There is a computer room of thirty three computers in total in our school’s elementary division. Among all of the computers in that room, thirty of them are for students’ computer classes and some other online tests. Every administration staff in the offices and every classroom are offered one computer, and there also provide two more public computers in the Office of Academic Affairs. Each of the computers has internet access so that we can surf on the internet for information in school. We often used the computers in the computer room or our classrooms to learn the usage of software, image and file editing, or to make progress report and so on. When getting back home, we would keep surfing on the internet to collect information and design our web pages during leisure time.

Difficulties and Solutions

◎Lack of discussion time: As a matter of fact that we were in different grades and classes, we didn’t have much time to gather and discuss together. In addition, every of us had our own class and club activities, and being busy on weekends as well. As a result, we could only manage to spare our time for discussion and learning once a week.

Solution→

We had our meeting during every lunch break on Monday, and even came to school during winter break for software learning and web design. In order to make the project be on schedule, we had to understand the related information about butterflies first, and then compile our research and make the carton book. Therefore, everyone made use of our leisure time at home collecting information and editing the photos, etc.

◎The high difficulty of field visits: The coverage of the butterfly ecological environment in Taiwan was too wide to visit thoroughly, and so far we had only visited the butterfly garden in our school. Therefore, the difficulty of field visits to every butterfly ecological environment in Taiwan was somewhat high for us.

Solution→

Search for the information related to butterfly ecology in the neighborhood. Among plenty of information, we found Jinshi Lake Butterfly Garden in San-min District, Purple Butterfly Valley in Maolin, Muh Sheng Museum of Entomology in Puli, Nantou, and visited the three places at different time to learn more about the butterfly ecology in varied areas

◎Having difficulty in understanding every kind of butterfly ecology:Among the a variety of butterflies in our school’s butterfly garden, our understanding of every kind of them was limited. As a result, introducing the professional knowledge of those butterflies to visitors in detail wasn’t a simple task for us.

Solution→

Select the certain kind of butterfly as our research topic. In addition to having the actual experience of rearing, we were also more familiar with their habits. In order to make the carton book more delicate, we picked three out of the all kinds of butterfly we had reared before to do our research project.

◎Making the carton book: So far our professional knowledge and abilities were not enough to make a carton book. Also, we were confronted with the problem of carton shortage.

解決之道

carton from our story mother (a kind of volunteering work in our school) to design our own story book. We wrote down what we were going to tell on the back of the papers and put them in sequence, and then practiced for story-telling in lower grade classes.

◎Being unskilled at story-telling: This was our first time using carton book to tell a story in other classes. Facing the school brothers and sisters, we all felt nervous and anxious on the stage.

Solution→

We decided to start our practice from telling a whole story together. Not until every of us had the experience of story-telling did we proceed to the next phase, which was to tell a whole story by oneself. By this way, we were more relieved, and together we could brainstorm more interesting stories.

◎Being unskilled at web design and software application:Never having learned any kind of courses related to web design, we all tried web design for the first time.

Solution→

Ask the teachers for help. We requested our teachers to teach us web design, image processing, art editing, file arrangement and so on. After coming to an agreement on the direction of our research, each of us was assigned different work and had to learn the related software. At last, everyone’s work being gathered together to accomplish the research.
