Project Element

It is a rare opportunity to participate in this activity and we have a deep inspiration both in school teaching course and daily life. It can be said a precious experience where we harvest a lot.

  1. When we plan the project and sort out the data, we find that the books are insufficient for use. Unexpectedly, the knowledge we have learned in the school can help us a lot in practical application, for instance, data collection and integration can cultivate our ability to integrate the main points in the class and sort out the course outline; information collection can help us improve efficiency and integrity in schoolwork; reporting ability can cultivate our fluent oral skills to make a report in class; webpage making can enhance our information application ability and make us have the sense of accomplishment when we complete the works.

  2. During word writing, the webpage needs refined and concise words, so we must proofread each other's words for improvement after the writing is completed through division of labor and cooperation. In this way, we have been accustomed to mutual aid and cooperation and the pursuit for high quality, which is a deep growing experience for us.

  3. In the beginning, we are completely unfamiliar with lantern art, but we gradually begin to understand the art of lantern through frequent search of information. After the interview, we admire Mr. Tun-hou Wu greatly for his skills and perseverance for lantern art. The network is boundless, so we think of carrying forward this traditional craft through network, so that more people can be moved by the beauty of lantern art as well as Mr. Tun-hou Wu’ perseverance for the maintenance of traditional art.

  4. We think that teamwork is the most important in this activity. We are able to complete anything smoothly by means of division of labor and cooperation. We have a discussion and search the data together, supervise and urge each other and we have fun together. We grow silently with the activity going.

  5. Large amounts of data are required for webpage making and there are many kinds of data, such as written data, network data, audio and video data, cloud-based data and interview records. Therefore, information equipment is an important assistant. We need to keep a record of every moment during the interview, so we use smart phone to record the voice and use the camera to record the whole process of interview. Thus, we not only store them in the memory but also make the physical records. In order to summarize and sort out the data into webpage, we have also learned the usage of several webpage software and picture editing software which we have never seen before. During the discussion, we share the information known by each other and our information ability has also been enhanced greatly!

1. How did your activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Combination with school curriculum :

(1) Grade 1-9 Curriculum principles:

As published by Ministry of Education, the main purpose of Grade 1-9 Curriculum outline lies in “cultivating all-round citizens who have the humanism sentiments and thoughts, integration ability, democratic accomplishment and local and international awareness and can learn perpetually”, and emphasizes that the curriculum should center on life, respect personality development and cultivate active exploration and reflection ability. It is hoped that students can further promote and actively care for society, environment and nature, understand and identify with local culture deeply and respect and appreciate other cultures.

The research of Cyberfair project “Passing on the Tradition of Lantern-making-The Master Craftsman,Tun-hou Wu” aims to understand Mr. Tun-hou Wu's profound skills of making lantern art to develop our traditional culture all around the world through the process of discussion and interview and discuss his spirit of giving lessons everywhere to maintain traditional skills. Thus, a solid bridge for cultural inheritance is built. The spirit of loving traditional skills makes us want to have a better understanding of Mr. Tun-hou Wu's world of art. Lantern represents the track of days in traditional life. As the time changes and social structure advances, these traditional culture heritages are gradually forgotten by our society and we feel it's a great pity. In Taiwan, Lukang is a rare hometown of artists including Heritage Awards winner, Craft Award winner and handicraft artists who have the unique life style, and it is worthwhile for those who are fond of the creation of traditional handicraft to go for a joyful travel to Lukang. This research also involves the excellent traditional culture and art in our local hometowns, thus we can contact the living environment and local customs and practices around us and meanwhile understand the cultural background and origin of lanterns. In this way, we further identify with the traditional cultures through understanding and appreciation. In the course of research, the spirit of unity and cooperation and ability of actively solving problem are cultivated, which also conform to the teaching idea of Grade 1-9 Curriculum.

During the process of discussing the lantern making, we have understood that lantern painting needs to carefully consider accuracy, proportion, angle, etc. in advance. The painting cannot be changed once we begin to draw and the failure in one stroke will lead to the complete failure in the entire lantern. Therefore, you can begin to draw after careful consideration.

(4) Natural Science

A certain space needs to be reserved in the lantern to keep the circulation of air so as to light the candle, and we have learned the contents in physical and chemical course like combustible, oxygen (comburent), heat energy (temperature).

5. What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The folk skill and traditional handicraft not only have the cultural value, they are also the childhood memories accompanying us to grow up. Carrying a lantern in Festival of Lanterns is the most beautiful memory in our childhood. However, in the industrially and commercially developed times, the lanterns in the Festival of Lanterns have been replaced by electronic products and the traditional beauty has been lost. In this interview activity, we see a kindly old man who tries his best to preserve the traditional skills as well as a family where the father is gracious and the son is filial. Due to the environmental change, advanced science and technology, popularity of 3C products and people's busy life, lots of traditional skills have declined. In order to have a better understanding of traditional lantern art, we decide to conduct a research with Mr. Tun-hou Wu as the theme to discuss the lantern culture, so as to advocate lantern culture and arouse people's awareness of traditional lantern art. Mr. Tun-hou Wu also gives lessons everywhere so as to arouse people's love and support for traditional art and develop traditional skills. His lessons not only have the function of “education” but also have the meaning of “inheritance” to get back the culture originally belonging to us.

We find that the job schedule is not arranged well during the process of making of special subject, thus we begin to speed up the process subsequently, which is really laborious. Therefore, the beforehand planning and full preparation are necessary and looking for a partner is also a lesson we should learn.

After several months of efforts, from being strange to being familiar, we have learned the skills of data collection and webpage making and also gone through setbacks, bad mood, mutual encouragement and the growth process. We take great pains to gain the Mr. Tun-hou Wu's cognition for lantern art, lessons of making process and the widening of vision. We have sacrificed the sleep and recreation time, but all the hard work is worthwhile when we see our work be completed little by little. Every lantern is Mr. Tun-hou Wu's masterpiece and the pains and efforts included cannot be measured by money. There is an honest and peaceful soul silently inheriting folk art behind these art treasures and it is worthwhile for us to experience it carefully.
