Mud Festival--Hsichou Cultural Festival

The Origin

Hsichou Township Office started to hold special local activities since 2010 such as "See Hsichou", "Hsichou Shang Water", "I Love Hsichou", "Hsichou Happiness", "Hsichou Moves On" to promote the local culture and create a sense of local identity. In this year, the activities combine the history of Jhuoshuei River, Taiwan's rural life culture and local characteristic industries and use various creative marketing and art actions to show the rural culture, community building and rural art. In order to highlight main theme of "black mud", 2016 Hsichou Mud Festival is held.

Black mud is a specialty of the Jhuoshuei River alluvial plain and a symbol of the richness of Hsichou Township. In order to thank the fertile soil gifted by the mother river, the Hsichou Township Office and the Cizai Cultural Industry Association hold the special activity "Mud Festival ", which can allow people to know more about this land, cherish the land, and pay more attention to the protection of water resources.
Hsichou's Township Head Cheng-lu Huang said:
This activity was held for marketing and promoting the local culture, so that the outside can see the beauty and richness of Hsichou to let everyone know that the soil is not dirty, it breeds life. The black mud is a symbol of Hsichou Township, as well as a gift bought by Jhuoshuei River.

Paradise of black mud

In this year, the theme of the cultural festival is the black mud. The Mud Festival used the black mud of Jhuoshuei River to create a paradise. In the cultural festival, there were many interesting activities, such as sports meet, tug of war, black mud installation art and mud market. The mud of Jhuoshuei River contains rich minerals and can be used as facial mask. Hsichou Township Head said that fertile black mud is from the mother river- Jhuoshuei River, which nourishes the agricultural products.

I think this is a very warm photo, because the mother, regardless of her dirty clothes, is still playing the black mud with her child, and throwing black mud. The mother said, if the Mud Festival is held in the next year, she will come back with her child. This activity calls up childhood of many adults. Even if their children are covered with the mud, they do not mind because this calls up their innocent childhood. This picture also reminds me of my childhood. Hsichou Township is a small countryside, and there are many fields adjacent to it. There is lots of mud in the fields, and the mud is black mud of Jhuoshuei River. It can also allow farmers to grow fragrant and sweet vegetables and fruits. The dried mud can also be used to control the kiln. The Mud Festival also reminds me of my composition-- Childhood Fun, which was assigned by my Chinese teacher.

At the site of the Mud Festival, a huge female sculpture is erected. This huge work is named "Mother River", which was created by many artists. "Mother River" is "Jhuoshuei River". The black mud is gifted by the earth. The creators expressed they first used mud, and molding is difficult. They spent two weeks in molding. The huge sculpture depicts a pregnant woman lying on the black mud, and she breeds all things on the earth. During the creation, the creators were pleasantly surprised by the sculpture shape like Taiwan. (Photo reproduced from Flyer of 2016 Hsichou Mud Festival)

Walking on the street

Hsichou Township invites professional artists to come and cooperate with experienced communities to work together for the Mud Festival. The design ideas are mostly originated from the Hsichou historical stories, public issues, and field investigation. The collected information or ideas are integrated, and the data are added so as to design the theme. The Mud Festival features are not completely designed by those professionals, some are from the communities. Even the performance props are made by the farmers themselves.

In Hsichou, walking on street shows beauty and vitality of Hsichou. Many community cultural development associations actively participate into the activity and their dress were bizarre, but showed their own characteristics and rural style. The community mothers and the students of elementary and middle schools had different look. Because Hsichou Township is the main rice producing place, Xicuo Community Development Association used straws which would have been burned after harvest as the main ornament. This can prevent air pollution caused by burning straws, and beautify the environment.

Nan-Jou Elementary School used ordinary cartons which are usually discarded and turned them into a new thing and a special adornment. The children imaginations are admirable!

Hsi Yang Junior High School

Our school Hsi Yang Junior High School participated in every Mud Festival. This time, we dressed up as bees, which represents we are as industrious and vibrant as bees. This dress also symbolizes our energy and vitality at the time of youth. A bee is the most representative symbol. At the start, we had no idea to display our own school or hometown characteristics, but after participation of the activity several times, we absorbed a lot of experience and observed how others showed their ideas, and finally integrated the experience and added our own ideas to create our features.

Hsi Yang Junior High School Harmonica Performance: In recent years, Hsi Yang Junior High School has become the harmonica star in Changhua. As long as we participate in the competition, we can achieve success. Thus, we will not miss Hsichou cultural festival!

Enthusiastic community mothers

The Hsichou communities used the natural materials to show their spiritual characteristics. The community mothers wore the skirts of straws. Their enthusiasm was really impressive!

The activity of walking on street has a history of 7 years, and has become more and more popular. It has different styles in each year but the theme is Hsichou local features, and has not been replaced by modern concept. The original features remain unchanged. This means the original intention of the people are not changed and they want to show the original features of their hometown. In sum, I think walking on street not only intends to show features of Hsichou but also improve cohesion of the people of Hsichou Township.
