During Qing Dynasty

Taiwan Presbyterian Church has experienced the ruling of Qing Dynasty of China, Japan, and Chinese Nationalist Party, witnessing the development of various periods of Taiwan.

James Laidlaw Maxwell, the very first missionary in Taiwan, was designated by the British Presbyterian Church in Scotland. In 1865 he started to preach and practice medicine in south Taiwan.

In 1872 the pastor of Canadian Presbyterian Church, George Leslie Mackay, also came to Taiwan and began his missionary work in north Taiwan. He was the first introducer of Presbyterian Church in north Taiwan.
