Perface:

Mr.Nian said if you wanted to know the history of calligraphy, we had the realize the origin of the Chinese Characters first. For me, it was real a tough task , therefore, all the members explored on the internet and asked the elder brothers and sisters. The data we gathered has been worked up as following:

Legend:

Han Characters, narrated by legends, was created by the Historial Official of Huang Monarch according to the shapes of the objects of the nature. After all, this was just a saying from the legends. In fact, the Han Characters were created together gradually by the ancestors of the Chinese People.

Origin:

The creations of the Han Characters were coming from the pictures. In the old days, our ancestors used to record the affairs of the society with painting which they communicated with each other . Later, the lines of the paintings became simpler and fixed gradually. Finally, there appeared fixed pronunciations and meanings .The paintings were no longer just paintings and they became characters.

For example : the thousands of years of the developments of the Han character "horse" "馬".

Based on the pictograms of the feature of culture
the forms and the structures are clear and easy to be distinguished.

After studying the structures of the Han Characters, the ancestors found the Six Methods of forming Chinese Characters: self-explanatory , pictogram, associative compound methods, mutually explanatory and phonetic loan characters.

Among them, the pictogram and mutually explannatory characters were single objects which could not be taken apart, therefore, they were called 「Wen」. On the other hand, the pictogram and the pictophonei characters were called 「Word」, which were able to be taken apart.

The Shuowen Dictionary, edited by Xiu Sen, in the East Han Dynasty was the first book to systematicallly study the Six Methods of forming Chinese Characters.

A. Pictogram Characters

This methods was created based on the pictograms of the features of nature it with simple lines. For example, seeing the shape of the sun, the shape of the moon and the shape of the trees, and so on, wordsof this method were sorted out to four catogories :

1. the shape of the human body : like son, human, mouth, hand and heart

2. astronomy and Geography : like rain, mountain, water and wind

3.animals and plants : like cow, bird, wood, melon and fish

4.utensiles and implemants: like door, window, book ,dish and house

B、Self-Explanatory Characters (ideogram)

This methods was created to use the symbles to express the abstract concepts in daily life.. For example,「上(上)」、「 下(下)」, which meant "up" and "down' in English, were not concrete objects. How could we express such kind of abstract concepts ? The ancestors of Chinses were so smart to use the simple symbols to solve the problem effectively.

The ideogram characters could be sorted up to two kinds :

a. purely use the symples to express the abstract concepts
For example:(囗,Wei);( 集一,Gi);別,Bia)
b.Adding the symbols on the piatogram characters to express the abstract concepts. For example, the word of "Chuin", "Yi", "Ren" and "Gan" of the Chinese Characters

C. associative Compounds
This method was used to combine two or more than two words to form a new word. For example, the Chinese "Wu", which was combined with the word " Zi " and "Ger", means stoppping using the weapons to stop the war. Besides, the Chinese word " Ren" plus "Yuan" become the compound "Xin", which means being honest.

words made of this method are as follows:
a. The Chinese word (休)are consisted of 「人」and「木」.
b. The Chinese word (占)are consisted of 「卜」and「口」.
c. The Chinese word (劣)are consisted of 「少」and「力」.
d. The Chinese word (右)are consisted of 「手」and「口」.

伐 伐=peple and the weapon

d、Picto-Phonetic
The picto-Phonetic characters are consisted of the picture and the phonetic symbol. For example, the word "草" is combined with the picture of (艸)and the sound of "早".The word "樹" is combined with the picture of (木).

words made of this method are as follows:
1. picture in the left and phonetic in the right:"伴"、"鰻".

2. picture in the right and phonetic in the left:"雞"、"郡".

3. picture in the top and phonetic in the below:"客"、"霖".

1. picture in the low and phonetic in the top:"熹"、"驚".

Devepment:

The Chinese chcarcters spreaded out to everywhere to the south of the Long River, the Korean Penninsula, Japan and even the Vienan. All the countries either used the characters or simplized the chcarcters to create their own characters. Same characters might have various phonetic sounds; however, the meaning was basically similar each other. As a result, different people from different locations could communicate with each other in Chinese Characters and books, which could also help to promote the Chinese Culture.
