Thoughts of Penmanship

By Hong Bien-Chin

洪炳欽圖

Five years ago, after my retiring from the school, some friends asked me what was my scheme of career after my retirement. I said I wants to paly and enjoy between the black and the white. In short, I desired to learn art of penmanship after my retirement. I have been learned writing penmanship for over eighteen years with the master, Mr.Nian Wen-Yi.

Mr.Nian said that:" In the old days, there were a lots of artists of being good at writing penmanship."; however, few of thir works of penmanship could be wide-spreading or long-spreading. It was questions of being lucky and unlucky.

Speaking of learning penmanship, it is important for the learners to find a great master. If the learner was lucky to find such a good teacher to teach him or her, then, perhaps he or she could gain the basic skills of penmanship. As a result, step by step, the learners might get further progress in the domain of penmanship in the futher.

In the old days, the pen, the ink, the paper and the inkstone were all very expensive for ordinary people. Most people did not afford to cultivate such kind of habit of art in daily life. However, in modern days, with the growth of the economy, the pen, the ink, the paper and the inkstone became cheaper than before. Lots of people were afford to cultivate such kind of habit of art. In short, Nowadays, penmanship can be the habit of both the poor and the rich.

With Whole Life

By Ms. Lin Li-Ue

Speaking of learning the penmanship, I was so glad that I had such kind of habit of art which I can spend my lifetime. From the old books of penmanship, I could deeply be moved by the profound and sceret elements of penmanship.

I personally admired the penmanship work of Mr.Nian Wen-Yi very much for the styles could be free, being following his inclinations, being unbounded, and being gentle.

In the modern days, a group of lovers of penmanship formed the Penmanship Association of Chong Jin to learn from each other by exchanging views of the works of penmanship among the branches of the association, which expanded the infinite space of our mind of art.

I have followed the master, Mr.Nian Wen-Yi, for over 10 years. I would spead my lifetime to pursure the highest domain of penmanship.

Experience of learning and teaching Penmanship

By Ms. Chen Ue-Hua

During the summer vacation, there were always many new learners came to learn Penmanship. In the first lesson, I always asked them "Why did you come to join this penmanship class?"

The motive was very important for the curricurum for it lasted for ten weeks. One of my teaching skills was to praise and admire the learners in order to increase their confidance of learning penmanship.

In the first week, the learners would be taught to choose four treasures of Penmanship, that is, the pen, the ink, the paper and the inkstone. Secondly, the learners had to learn to hold the pen correctly. Then, the teachers would tell the students of weilding the pen. At this moment, the students would always be told the story of the great master of penmanship, Mr.Wang Xi-Zi,to encourage the students to write hard to be a master of penmanship.

Several weeks later, the students would be asked to hand in their homework after class as possible as they could. Besides, they had to finish their homework with great respect.

Before the penmanship lesson, all the students would put their works on the both sides of the walls of the classroom in order to learn from each other, which was one of the good methods of making progress in learning penmanship.

Finally, I wanted to thank the master, Mr.Nian Wen-Yi for he introduced me to come into the domain of penmanship.

The Process of Learning Penmanship

By Ziau Wen-Xuan

Speaking of the master, I thought Mr.Nian Wen-Yi was like a walking dictionary of penmanship for he was good at all types and shapes of penmanship. He often told us a principle of learning the penmanship : "Being straightforward but not losing control." He was really a master of penmanship.

Gains of learning penmanship

By Ms. Chen Mei-Zi

There are many advantages of learning penmanship: first of all, writing penmanship was a good method of cultivating one's mind and character. It could also kill time and improve one's health as well. Secondly,Mr.Nian Wen-Yi, the master gave me a copy of the Heart Sutra of Kon Hi,which was imitated by himself. It was so strange that if you don't concentrate and clean your mind and your body, you were likely to miss to write some words while writing. It was a good way of practicing Penmanship. What's more, Kon Hi was mook of Japan, who inherited the features of the master, Mr.Wang Xi-Zi, and added his peosonal energy of penmanship which were very excellent to be followed. Besides, writing penmanship could express one's feeling and emotions of daliy life. The most important of all was that leraning penmanship could improve and train the qi of middle-jiao energy of the body.

Affinity

By Wei Xiu-Zhu

In recent years, there were many successful activities held by the Penmanship Association of Chong Jin. For example, in the Taiwan Latern Festival, which was held in Lu Kang this year, the association was planned to promote the currirulums of making rubbings of inscriptions, making thread-bound books ,and live writing for the guests.

By such kind of activity of interaction, we could connect all the people ,local people , people all over the country and people all over the world. We all very glad and thought that good activities would be helpful for the promotion of the art of penmanship.

The Beauty of Penmanship

By Shi Re-Long

In the Penmanmanahip Association of Chong Jin, there were always penmanship exhibitions of the members held in a year. From the appreciations of the works from each other, not only the senior members, but also the greenhands of the association, all the members got great chance to discuss and promote their penamnship. Sense of success was important for learning Penmanship.

Learning Penmanship

By Huang Liau-Ju

We can learn penmanship for implication; we can learn penmanship for appreciation;we can learn penmanship to cultivate our moral character and strong mind; we can learn penmanship to cultivate our sense of Aesthetics of art; we can also adjust our breath by means of writing penmanship to expand the length of our life.

Heartfelt Wishes of Learnign Penmanship

By Mr. Liu Zone- Sin

With the recommendation f Mr.Xin Wen-Ria, It was my pleasure and honor to be able to join the Penmanship Association of Chong Jin. Mr. Nian Wen-Yi was so moderate and learned and accomplished, and the classmates were so polite and so kind to tell me what Ihad to know in the association. In the class, the master would ask the students to write, and then they would hand in the works to the teacher. Finally, the master would correct the penmanship and told the students where and how to improve their works.

In 2003, April 29, I became the 48th President of the Penmanship Association of Chong Jin.At the hand-over ceremony, many masters of the association came to have a live show of penmanship which was pleased by all the guests. Besides, it was the accomplishment of the association, too.

Cultural inheritance

The Spirit of Penmanship

By Ms. Zhou Chuan-Man

Mr. Nian Wen-Yi, was a great master of being learned and accomplished in the domain of penmanship. He has been writing for over 40years, and in the late years, he did his best to promote the education of penmanship; neverthe less, he didn't stop creating.

The master often said that "it is very important to have spirit of penmanship for the writers." In fact, all the unique teaching materials of penmanship were made by Mr.Nian Wen-Yi, which were coming from thousands of books stored by the master. The copybooks could be divided into three groups : for competence, for correction and for appreciation. He often encouraged the students to read books about penmanship to cultivate the spirit of penmanship. He was really a great master.

I hope I can follow the steps of the master living a life of leisure with penmanship.

Walking Dictionary Of Penmanship─Mr.Nian Wen-Yi

By Mr. Zhao Wen-Zhang

I have been followed the Mr.Nian Wen-Yi for years. Almost everyone made grat progress in the domain of penmanship, except me. It was really a shame for me. It's a pity.

When we had a penmanship lesson, the teaching materials were of variety. The master taught us the ancient academic, the historial characters, replacements of the dynasty and the name of the dynasty, and the allusions of history. Besides, he would mentioned the history of the life of the old Lu Kang, and the custom of the local people, which was very interesting to me.

Speaking of the master, I thought Mr.Nian Wen-Yi was like a walking dictionary of penmanship for he was good at all types and shapes of penmanship. He often told us a principle of learning the penmanship : "Being straightforward but not losing control." He was really a master of penmanship.

Forming Cause with Penmanship

By Mr.Xun Yu-Heng

I have been taught by the master for over four years. One day, Mr.Nian Wen-Yi encouraged me to show my work on the exhibition of Penmanship.

Thank the Penmanship Association of Chong Jin for the master cultivated me the right habit of writing penmanship which helped me enrich my life after retiring from schoo.

Contemplation with Penmanship

By Mr.Chang Jia-Zeng

Those who don't know penmansip might say that it was very boring. However, penmanship is my favorate by chance, anyway.

Speaking of penmanship, I think the inspiration is the keypoint for the writer to create a good work of penmanship.Thersfore, reading is ,by no means, very important.

Practice, Practice, and Practice

By Mr. Lee Hong-Zi

Not long ago, I got a chance to have a live demonstration of writing penmanship in the Culture Center of Changhua. Althought, the lengh of the show of writing was only last about five minutes, I was nervous to die for I was always nervous of strangers. When writing, the saeat was running and full of my hands. Mr.Nian Wen-Yi told me to calm down. Don't worry, be easy.

With his encouragement, I finally accomplished the task.

Penmanship on the Wall

By Ms. Yu Ue-Zhu

On Sundays of October, Mr.Nian Wen Yi had penmanship demonstrations in the Art Museum of Changhua. The master will write in front of the guests. It's been a whothwhile trip of penmanship.

When I got into the museum at ten o'clock in the morning, I saw a piece of paper been sticked on the wall. Mr.Nian was writting on the wall. The master said there are three points of penmanship : the pen, the paper and the ink." The wall penmanship showed extreme and admiration by pounding the table.

Under the sky of October after the typhoon, the warm sunshine was greeting to the guests entering the Art Museum of Changhua. There was atmosphere of art of penmanship and harmony between the master and the students which warmed the heart of the participants.

The students were surounding around the master to ask questions. The master took great pains to answer all the questions of the members and narrated clearly on the blackboard. To my surprise, there are few differences between the handwriting of the blackboard and those of the penmanship.

It was my pleasure of learning the philosophy of life and the attitude of art.

Where there is a will, there is a way.
