Experience the Potted Plants DIY.

Instructor: Mr. Lo from Jflower Horticultural Co.

Location: in front of the earth god temple in Dongping Ln., Raoping Vil., Tianwei Township

Mr. Los Profile: Mr. Lo is now in his 70s. He specializes in how to produce the miniature landscape and potted plants of the Japanese Juniper. He should be the pioneer who creates the miniature landscape of the Japanese Juniper in Tianwei Township. In the prime time, his miniature landscape of the Japanese Juniper were put in containers and sold out through exporting. Now he also grows the ground hemlock.

Today we had an appointment with Mr. Lo during break time at noon. We went to his producing field to experience how to grow the flower crops-miniature landscape of the Japanese Juniper, and figured out Mr. Lo is already an old man who is in his 70s. Although he never had a chance to study, he can make a fortune by growing the miniature landscape of the Japanese Juniper. Mr. Lo was very kind and said, I didnt know what to do because I dont know the ropes so I started to do the horticulture business. Thats how I came to know the horticultural art in Japan. I started to grow the Japanese Juniper. I thought if I wanted to make a living by doing this business, I must study hard. I should have better creative ideas and price compared to others. Therefore, I found a strong and healthy mother plant, and studied how to do the grafting propagation on the mother plant. In this way, I could reduce the growth period of the Japanese Juniper, and could handle a large amount of orders. I could use the cutting propagation to grow the Japanese Juniper. Thus, I could have more sources that I could use to produce the potted plants, which means I could offer a more competitive price for sales.

While we were chatting, we figured out that Mr. Lo now only concentrates on the production field of the potted plant art. As for rest of the horticulture business, he handed over his business to his son. Mr. Lo told us that he has been living a humble life since he first started the business. Once he had some savings, he would purchase money mortgage. As he counted the lands he purchased in this life, he knew he has plenty of portions of land, and now he wants to share the lands with his sons. He owns plenty of acres of land. Good grief! One acre of land equals to 10 portions of land. One portion of land equals to 300 pings, and a class room covers 21-25 pings so that will be an area with 8 meters wide and 9 meters long (1 square meter0.3025 pings). That means he owns plenty of acres of land, which should be larger than our school. We finally realized that one can shine if given the right direction and chance to win through hard work. We must work hard to fight for it! It reminds us of the Buddhist Pine sculptor pro, Mr. Chang, Chih-Che we met last time. He is almost the same age as Mr. Lo, and both of them can be the representative figure of potted plant art. They all made a fortune by doing this business. Art is a priceless business indeed.

Mr. Los individual production field looks like a wholesale market that sells the Japanese Juniper potted plant. Each potted plant was placed in perfect order, and each looks as if it has its own charm.

[1] Mr. Lo showed us how to do it to trim the Japanese Juniper potted plant on-site, and showed us his sculpture artwork.

Mr. Lo told us that the most important thing to note is to do it according to its natural curve while doing the sculpture. It allows the original shape to look simple and smooth. Basically, the principle is to smooth each leaf and allow sunshine in so that each leaf can absorb light energy from the sun.

As for how to display its charm, it takes years of experience and life experience to do it right. The most important thing is to have plenty of basic knowledge of horticulture. Be patient and always work hard to learn the concept of aesthetics. Everything can be learned. A tree can be made into a piece of art, and so do people.

Here are a few key points to be noted when doing the sculpture:

Trim the tree according to its natural curve or line. Keep the original style, and try to reveal that particular feature of the tree so that its elegant charm can be reserved. The tree will look different from other mundane fine art.

Basically, trimming a tree can empower life and soul by mending the Japanese Juniper potted plant. Trim the branch according to different tree shape by following its structure. The beauty of its branch can reveal the sculptors artistic cultivation. (To trim a tree, the sculptor must think twice and doubt whether the tree can receive the sun and perform photosynthesis. Otherwise, it will spoil the ship for a hap' orth o' tar.)

@ @

Wire up the branch with an aluminum wire: The purpose of wiring up the branch is to allow the plant to grow naturally through heliotropism so that the leaves can receive light energy from the sun to perform photosynthesis.

@ @

The technique to wire up the branch with an aluminum wire is to focus on the overall structure so it can help the tree to grow into a shape, which reveals its charm of grandeur, graceful, dynamic, and calm.

@ @

Only the leaves on the upper stem should not be removed from the stem. Remove the branch and leaves to add more figurative beauty to the stem.

We want to give our special thanks to Mr. Lo and the way he showed us how to do it. We never had a chance to learn it in the biology class. If we werent given a chance to see it, we couldnt believe that a tree can have such a charm and imposing manner. We should say this tour is certainly a worthwhile trip.

[2] We accidentally found the nursery area of the Taiwan national treasure, the Taiwan yew.

Mr. Lo showed us the way to see his nursery area after a tour guide on the Japanese Juniper potted plant. Therefore, we followed him and went into the nursery area, and found out thatK

Theres nothing except for the Japanese Juniper produced by cutting propagation and nursery. We found there are thousands of Taiwan yews, the Taiwan national treasure, inside the nursery area. That was quite a Xanadu!

Profile of the Taiwan Yew
Taiwan Yew X Taiwan Pine, National Treasure

The Taiwan Chinese Yew is one of the 5 previous Coniferous trees currently found in Taiwan. [Cypress class, Taiwania cryptomerioides, Cedar, Taiwan incense cedar, and the Taiwan Yew] are the types of trees that belong to the evergreen trees. This type of tree was mostly found in the mountain area at 1600-2500 meters of height above the sea level in Taiwan. Since the tree grows quite slowly, it may need 50-250 years to grow and develop into the woods available for use. The wood structure is firm and compact, sturdy and shiny. Its heartwood is purple red compared to its creamy yellow sapwood. Such a wood with contrast colors can be used for high-end material to make the high-class furniture.@

The fruit of the Taiwan Yew shaped like a red bean is the most colorful and beautiful fruit among the 5 Coniferous trees. Its fruit can be quite a different characteristic for the pine tree; thus, it was called the Taiwan Yew, or red fir. [Note1]

[3] Conclusion

@

We are very fortunate to have this opportunity to experience how to make the potted plant artwork of the Japanese Juniper. We had a chance to make up the missing part to introduce the local features in Tianwei because some of the team members were not involved in the last project we did. We do like the Japanese Juniper potted plant. A small potted plant will cost only a few hundred NT dollars. Yet, a tree aged 20-30 years will cost much more than that price.

It requires taking notice of its drainage and sunlight to grow the Japanese Juniper. Therefore, it is most appropriate to use the sand agent for growing the Japanese Juniper. We want to give our special thanks to Mr. Lo for giving us the instructions!

The Japanese Juniper belongs to the Sabina Mill. Its the evergreen tree with curved creeping branches. The twigs grow upward in bushes. The pine leaves are short and tiny. The leaves usually grow in pairs through interaction or in whorls of 3. The leaf is 3-6 mm long. Each leaf grows closely together in perfect order slightly curly upward. The circular pine cone looks a bit blue green. [Note2]

The Japanese Juniper can be grown by cutting propagation
if it planted in the sand.

When we stared at the Taiwan Yew,
we were so excited and amazed by its look.
