(I)Flower growing started around 19century.
It was said that the 19th century is almost a century ago from now where Cantonese and Minnan pioneers came here to build their house. There was one called Hsiu-Chi Wu who loved to hang around and believed in Buddha. He came here at his teens. He saw the locale growing flowers in Zhangzhou on his way home so he brought many seeds and twigs. He tried to grow seeds and twigs after getting back to his village. He started to burry twig, grow plants. So this is the beginning of the story how he and his brothers start to grow flowers. [Note 2]
~Description of Table~ [Note 1]
All of a sudden, local households began to grow plants after they found the Wu Residence stood out from the crowds simply because of the beautiful flowers and trees they grow. The gardening started to boom in Tianwei, which opened another door of business for the local pioneers. [Note 2]
(II)How the Flower/Wood Trade Begins
helps to grow sprouts.
Not until the Showa period (1926-1989) did the councilman Lo
Lao-Keng began to talk to the ¡§Chief of Peasant¡¦s Union (like
today¡¦s Executive Secretary of Farmer¡¦s Association)¡¨ as he saw
the Wu¡¦s family plant nursery business did make it big. He asked
the Farmer¡¦s Association to take over the plant nursery business
so that the farmers can apply to purchase the sprouts and grow
them at home at low prices. The flower gardening business
started to boom like flowers in full blossom in this area, and
there are plenty of successful merchants who can grow plants
quite fruitfully in Tianwei. [Note 2]
(IV)The Origin of the Roadside Park
Mr. Hu Kao-Wei still remembered when Governor Mr. Hsieh, Tung-Min came to my father, Ho Kai-Liang for a sightseeing tour in the garden at home in 1972. My father was a local pioneer merchant who grow plants quite successfully, and he knew Mr. Hsieh very well. When they ate and talked, they spoke of how they saw the other countries build the roadside park nearby the expressway.
After the talk, my father and some local gentries suggested the central government to open the place to public. Taiwan Provincial Government officially made this place a special district known as the Roadside Garden for local residents in 1973. They chopped 2 betel nut trees in front of the former township mayor Mr. Chen Chung-Chuan and his secretary Shih Chiu-Mei with the breaking ground action. The place became today¡¦s linear Roadside Garden, which used to be called the ¡§Roadside Park¡¨.
(V) ¡§Roadside Park¡¨ has changed its name to ¡§Roadside Garden¡¨.
Mr. Hu Kao-Wei and his wife, Mrs. Wang Ya-Ling then added, ¡¥They
changed the name to ¡§Roadside Garden¡¨ because most people came
here and couldn¡¦t find where the ¡§Park¡¨ is.
(VI) Flower is cash crop with higher revenue.
Mrs. Wang Ya-Ling told us, ¡§the supply and demand relationship
in the flower cash crop market highly depends on the economic
development.¡¨ They had this strong feeling during the time they
learned how to run the gardening business with her
father-in-law. They had experienced through the economic
take-off and financial crisis in Taiwan.
(VII)Image Bazaar Planning for Tianwei Roadside Garden
Mrs. Wang Ya-Ling told us about her story as she still
remembered. That was a time when people could hardly make a
living during the recession so the young people came back to
their hometown to find a new way out with the local industry
through brainstorming. The gardening vendors in Tianwei District
all agreed to collaborate with the government policy to upgrade
the flower industry in the Roadside Garden and make it big
through diversification. Therefore, my husband and I decided to
stay and took over the business of my father-in-law¡¦s Kai-Liang
and changed it into a leisure farm to run the new gardening
(VIII)Leisure park in Tianwei Township
Mrs. Wang continued and said, ¡¥Council of Agriculture of
Executive Yuan helped the Tianwei Roadside Garden to officially
set up the ¡§Tianwei Township Leisure Park¡¨ in 2002.¡¦ Once again,
they planned to explore how much values they could find in the
tourism and leisure travel in the professional flower gardening
park in Tianwei, the hometown of flowers. Tianwei township has
become the place for the first image bazaar using flowers as its
theme in Taiwan.
We¡¦d like to say thank
you to Mrs. Wang Ya-Ling who introduced us the former name of
Tianwei Roadside Garden, its origin and history. She also introduced
us to the well-known ¡§mums flower¡¨ that needs night-lighting for
special care in Tianwei. We enjoyed a great meal at lunch in his
restaurant, took a group photo with the next generation of Mr. Ho
Kai-Liang, and finally we called it a day for today¡¦s interview. We
did a great job today during the interview and had lots of fun. We
not only learned how to interact with people, express what arts is,
and know how to treat other people well. We also get to know the
history of Tianwei, and received plenty of feedback. Yeah!
