★Selection of Topic
Working Date: September 24, 2015
Location: Computer Lab
As we first started the CyberFair, we began to think about what our topic would be. We tried to come up with some ideas by going through others’ work from previous years and watching different videos on various topics on the Internet. We thought of many topics, such as the Adahesong Taiwan Salico Enterprise, the Socks Factory, blood donation centers, and the breathing roads. At last, we decided on “the Breathing Road” as the topic for our CyberFair project.
We chose “the Breathing Road” as our topic for two main reasons:
First, in 2015, many places in New Taipei City suffered from both water restrictions and flooding. However, in a particular area of New Taipei City, the residents there not only had plenty of water to use but also did not suffer from flood as they had in the past. The place is called the Limen Village in Xizhi, where “breathing roads” can be found within its community.
Secondly, it is believed that not only do these “breathing roads” prevent flood and drought, but they can also help regulate the temperature in the surrounding area. Moreover, in the past, we often thought of reducing our carbon footprint as the only way to deal with global warming; as it turns out, paving the right kind of roads can also help slow down global warming. This made us really interested in learning more about the pavement, and we were determined to find out more about how the “breathing” roads work.
When we looked into the “breathing roads,” we discovered that its inventor, Mr. Jui-Wen Chen, only holds a junior high school degree. How could someone with his level of education invent such an impressive and practical method of road pavement? We became very curious aboutMr. Chen’s story and his invention of the breathing road. We came to our decision to further study his life and his invention, so that everyone can hear his story as well.
