The Construction of Huangqing Bridge
When the red-crowned cranes stopped at
Qingshui Wetland in 2007, the county
government was planning to pave roads
and establish Huanchin Bridge, which
would cut Qingshui Wetland into two.
Hence, several environment-protecting
groups hoped eagerlythat the government
would rearrange the route and make the
wetland into the list of important
national wetlands.The local farmers,
on the other hand, hoped to see the bridge constructed as scheduled rather than to see
the wetland made into the list. They were afraid, once it put on the list, it would be
harderfor them to gain access to further development of the farms. The county government
once suspended the building of the roads during the stay of red-crowned cranes. Nonetheless,
scared by dogcatchers and the localfarmers, thesecranes were too frightened to stay at Qingshui
Wetland.
The village head stated thrights of the
local farmers should not be sacrificed
merely for birdsof sucha small quantity.
The construction of the roads resumed on
Oct. 15, 2008, afterthe cranes made their
departure,andaccomplishedin September, 2010.
