Intro:

 For the purpose of finding out school students’ understanding of Taiwanese opera and the “Zhi-Shan Taiwanese Opera Club”, on January 19, 2015 Teacher Yu-chun Tseng conducted an Arts and Humanities seminar on the introduction of Taiwanese Opera and designed a questionnaire for the participants to fill-out. The purpose of the questionnaire was to find out whether the student’s interest and knowledge toward the subject had increased after the seminar. A total of 149 questionnaires were given with 122 valid and 27 invalid responses.

Analysis:

 This section consisted of 6 questions and the results showed that over 70% of the participants had seen Taiwanese Opera. Most of the participants had the knowledge of the language used in the opera and its contents. Over 50% of the participants saw opera through television and temple festivals. However, prior to the seminar only 25% of the participants showed great interest in watching Taiwanese opera. From the results one can see that few participants were interested in watching Taiwanese opera.

Analysis:

 This section consisted of 6 questions. Almost all participants were equipped with relative knowledge on the subject of Taiwanese Opera. They knew its origin is in Yilan and that the opera consisted of mainly seven-word tune and Duma tune. They also knew that the dance was referring to the movement in Taiwanese opera, and that most operas were performed on stage. Most of the participants thought that Taiwanese opera is similar to modern stage performance. Furthermore, a point worth noting is that the seminar had increase the interests of the participants toward Taiwanese opera and that more than 50% of students found it interesting and intriguing.

Analysis:

 This section consisted of 5 questions. There was little difference in the Participants’ knowledge of the name “Zhi-Shan Taiwanese Opera Club” prior to and after the seminar; there was little increase in the number of participants who knew the name after the seminar. However, participants knew that Teacher Yu-chung Tseng was an important member of the Zhi-Shan Taiwanese Opera Club and that she usually played the role of xiao sheng. One third of the participants knew about the performance and knew that there were students who took part in it. After the seminar, more than 50% of participants were interested in seeing the opera again. Seminars such as this not only helped students get to have a better understanding of the “Zhi-Shan Taiwanese Opera Club”, and also a deeper knowledge of Taiwanese opera.
