We were curious about the meaning behind President Cheng’s name, and upon research we found out that the character 鯤(kun) in his name was adopted because his father, having dreamt of a whale on the eve of his birth, decided to utilize this vision, together with a passage from “A Happy Excursion” of Zhuangzi—“To the northern oceanic expanse resides a fish; to this fish is attributed the name whale (鯤); to the knowledge of the whale’s colossal dimensions all are unbeknownst”—as the basis of his name, hence the 鯤 character. Just a week after birth he was taken by his father to play by a small creek, to which his grandmother expressed indignant disapproval. His father, however, justified their excursion to the waters by claiming that “he’s a fish by name and nature, a little water won’t hurt him!” And indeed, true to his name, President Cheng was already able to competently swim and dive at the age of four.
For President Cheng, coming up with a satisfactory brand name for his upcoming business was no easy task. He became fascinated by the mental image of the tuna, the agility and vitality it embodies in its motion, and eventually decided to name his brand based on the exclamatory outburst “Ah! Tunas!” President Cheng begin his life as a fish, and as a fish he now swims actively and confidently in the seas of the outdoor goods market, as well as in the waters of charity and sports events.
