Frustrations Green Island Prison

After KMT retreated to Taiwan, they took over the power from the former Japan rulers. However, their repressive military regime enraged local Taiwanese and more and more disputes occurred, finally causing the outbreak 228 Incident, in which thousands of Taiwanese and people from Mainland China were killed.

In view of the tragedy, Yang Kui drafted “Peace Declaration”, appealed all the peoples in Taiwan to cooperate together and the KMT authority to release the political prisoners. The appeal offended KMT and Yang Kui was then arrested and sentenced 12 years in jail.

He wrote the sentence to inspire himself:

Energy is in my body. Energy is in my heart. Though it's a frosty time, I would never get frozen.

Nevertheless, as a born writer, Yang Kui never stopped writing in prison. He wrote lots of notes, essays and letters which were assembled into“ A Rose Never Squashed” and “Family Letters from Green Island.”

After doing his time, Yang Kui once said,” I was put into jail because of my pursuit of "peace". It is really a great irony for me and the country.” However, Yang Kui is a real brave.
