History of Cats’ Village

Hou-Tong was first named “Monkey Cave” due to the fact that there used to be many caves on the cliffs, and there would be monkeys resting in those caves. It was after the war that the “Monkey Cave” was renamed into Hou-Tong. The village in the early days focused on the development of coal mining, and the Hou-Tong railroad station was the place where the coal was exported to other places. Hou-Tong’s population used to be about 2000~3000 people; however, after the recession of the mining business, people started to move out of the village, leaving only the elders behind. Although not a lot of people visits the railroad station, but because of this the Village showed its beauty and unique features.
