A Visit to Dahsin Elementary School

A Visit to Dahsin Elementary School by Yi-Hsin Tsai
Today we went to Dahsin School. We were looking forward to observing how Luke and his team shot videos for the Renshi Academy. On our way there, we practiced our interview questions in the car. We arrived at the school much more quickly than we had expected.
Once we entered the school grounds, we saw the big playground. During their recess time, we saw the students do their lion dance team practice. We found it interesting that their lion’s head was rectangular. We enjoyed watching the practice session. Soon it was time to get down to business, so we headed to the principal’s office. Principal Hsiao-chi Chen treated us to cookies and pomelo tea. After that, we started to ask questions. Hsin-tse and I talked to Jerry, the lead actor in the Renshi Academy videos. Jerry was a My Culture Connect international volunteer. He was eloquent and outgoing. He told us this about Luke. First, Luke helped a great number of people. Second, he never asked for anything in return. Third, he never got mad. Fourth, he was a gentleman. In Jerry’s eyes, Luke was a very good person.
As for Principal Chen, she said Luke was a respectful person. He had many good qualities. First he was a perfectionist. Second, he never ran out of energy. Third, he was a man of enthusiasm. Fourth, he was a workaholic. He never said he was tired. The principal was very humorous. We all had a good laugh.
After the interview, we went to the set where they shot videos. The students of Dahsin were very professional; they never laughed when they were in action. Luke didn’t have enough equipment but he still stayed determined and continued working very hard. It was a special experience watching people shoot videos. We took a lot of photos. As we were running out of time, we took pictures with Principal Chen and Jerry and then said goodbye to them. After the interviews, we knew another thing about Luke: he was a workaholic who never got tired. He is a very special man and unique individual.

Today was very exciting for our Cyberfair Project team. We were going to Dahsin Elementary School where the My Culture Connect team was shooting videos for the new Renshi Academy. The Renshi Academy will produce English teaching materials, held in an accessible online location accessible free to all. They will also provide teacher support for those proving to be serious students of the academy. It is the next step in providing enhanced free English learning opportunities.
Ms. Hsia-chi Chen, school principal, gave us a very warm welcome. She treated us to snacks and proved to be very humorous. She said the Luke was like a heavy motorcycle, full of energy and power. She said that once you get to know this man, you will want to be like him. We got a big kick out of this.
Principal Chen told us that every Monday morning Luke, Jerry and the team shoot learning videos at the school. These videos are made for online study. When students earned a certain number of points doing the online work, there would be opportunities to speak to native English speakers.

We explored the set where they were shooting videos and got to watch them at work. We took numerous photos of the process. It was like watching your favorite movie actors and actresses in action.
We really enjoyed watching Luke direct the student actors and actresses as they washed their faces and brushed their teeth. We wonder if they sometimes got tired of repeating the same scene several times. They often did it over and over again, in order to have a good take. Our teacher, Mr. Chou-tong, said that it was a lot of hard work to turn these clips into useful teaching videos. We realized all the work that goes into helping us with our English education.
Mr. Jerry Becwar was very friendly. Afterwards, he told us stories of his hunting experiences back in the United States. Sometimes, we did not understand all the words that Jerry spoke, but it was interesting nonetheless.
