Interviews with Principal Yun-chan Hong and Ms. Shelly Chiang by Yi-Hsin Tsai
This morning we went to Jhonghe Elementary School to interview Principal Yun-chan Hong and Ms. Shelly Chiang. Principal Hong is a kind, elderly person. He invited us to drink tea in his office and treated us to delicious fruit. He gave us a warm welcome. Our anxieties faded away quickly.
Our principal told us that she was influenced by Principal Hong to work hard to learn English. Though he is over 60 years old, he practices his English to be a role model for his students. He has worked diligently with Luke to provide his students with a good English learning environment. He is a very good principal. He met Luke five years ago when Luke visited Jhonge. He said what Luke did was impressive. He never gave up. He promoted English education in rural areas without asking for anything in return. Luke worked so hard, sometimes to the point of exhaustion; yet he still remained a happy person.
Besides Principal Hong, Shelly helped us learn more about Luke. She told us that she was Luke’s student at the Ming Harng Temple when she was in sixth grade. In her high school years, she worked as his volunteer until she went to college. She volunteered because she was so impressed by Luke and his work. He has been a major influence in her life.
Shelly studied English in college. In her eyes, Luke has many strengths. He is well-read and upright. For example, he doesn’t use pirated software. His devotion to education touched her heart. His broad-mindedness and his trustworthiness are qualities that she aspires to emulate.
