Preface

Many Xizhou’s farmers are guava professionals who are simple-minded and brave enough to make breakthroughs in research work and cultivation technologies. Mr. ChengTung-fu is one of the best guava masters in here.

Mr. Tung-fu Cheng, a native Xizhou, only finished junior high school’s education. He has achieved several achievements that are worth emulation:

Good-quality and Safe:Mr. Cheng was awarded with first place in Pearl guava evaluation, owned traceability and passed the certification of GAP

    Innovative Technologies

Normally a guava tree can live to two decades. Within a year, the fruit of guava trees can be picked about eight or nine months. Hence the management and technology are crucial factors that may affect the quality of guavas. According to Mr. Cheng, his success in guava plantation comes from his respect toward the Nature, and his fertilizer practice.

  • Respect the Nature: Mr. Cheng never pours milk into the soil where the guavas are grown. Some farmers might add other substances in the soil so as to make the guavas sweeter or crisper. Yet these substances might shorten the lifespan of the soil, which is against sustainability.
  • Adequate fertilizing: Give less nitrogenous fertilizer during rainy season. Phosphorous and potassium, on the other hand, are vital to the hardness of a guava. Phosphorous triggers the splitting of cells and enhances the growth of a guava. Potassium helps a plant to absorb sunshine and increases metabolism. Potassium also helps a plant to counter drought and keep sprouting in spring.
  • Close observation: Although a seasoned farmer, he keeps on observing the growing condition of guavas and discovers that the nutrition of a guava lies with its leaves. The darker the leaf, the good-tasting the guava.
  • Working hard to make breakthroughs: Currently he is trying to grow red-heart guavas and expects to have a good harvest. It seems that he keeps having a conversation with guavas. With enthusiasm and professionalism, he keeps doing a good job and loves to share his ideas about guava cultivation with others.

Faces up to Challenges

According to Mr. Cheng, nobody wanted to teach him how to grow guavas in the beginning. Then he decided to offer help in others’ guava farms and learned from these farmers. Over a period of time, he acquired some tips on guava plantation. After seeing a good harvest of the Pearl guavas, he tried to make improvement on guavas. Even if he had a not-decent-enough educational background, he made a committed effort to improve the species of the guavas.  He has ruminated on the technology of guava cultivation in recent years in the hopes of growing better guavas in the future. It is his hope that Taiwan’s guava can be world-famous someday.
