Project Description

How many people really care about Taipei, this bustling city? How many people truly love and hope for the best of Taipei? Taipei has many unique features to be discovered and preserved from globalization. City Yeast is devoted to help urban residents discover the beauty of Taipei and cultivate their feelings toward the city, by attracting the residents’ attention and curiosity through creativity to develop city features that all residents are proud of. We hope that our research on City Yeast, and simulation of the action plans of City Yeast, we can show everyone the unique feature of Taipei. Our joint efforts will make Taipei a better place.

In order to explore and introduce City Yeast, this Cyberfair project will be presented in 5 sections: Introduction of City Yeast, Activities (including all the activities of City Yeast), Overseas (foreigners participating in City Yeast), Broadcast (interviews with relevant persons, questionnaire survey) and School Yeasts. What's unique about City Yeast is their creative, interesting, and meaningful projects. In order to experience what they've been through, we implemented our own creative and meaningful activities on campus.

Description of Our Community

As the capital of Taiwan, Taipei City has heavy traffic, high buildings, and prosperity. This is the impression most people hold towards Taipei. However, as Taipei citizens, we are aware that Taipei still has room for improvement. The Balcony Project allows us to realize the serious consequences from people’s selfishness in maintaining the cleanliness of the environment and the resulting messy appearance of the city. The "Meet Taipei: Design" project shows the deficiencies of Taipei despite its good living quality. Active in Taipei, City Yeast brought gradual changes to Taipei through culture and design. The city we live in is full of prosperity and diversity, and will continuously improve through City Yeast.

Project plan summary

In order to explore and introduce City Yeast, this Cyberfair project will be presented in 5 sections: Introduction of City Yeast, Activities (including all the activities of City Yeast), Overseas (foreigners participating in City Yeast), Broadcast (interviews with relevant persons, questionnaire survey) and School Yeasts. What's unique about City Yeast is their creative, interesting, and meaningful projects. To experience what they've been through, we implemented our own creative and meaningful activities on campus.

Our Computer and Internet Access

Internet in school: The Internet speed at school is 30MB internet transmission, and the on-campus Internet includes both wire and wireless network. All classrooms have computers. It is convenient to conduct discussions, data search, and print out documents in school.

Internet at home: every team member has a computer at home, and they can conduct research online at home.

Problems We Had To Overcome

The main obstacle is the difficulty to coordinate our time. There are so many activities in senior high school. We need to prepare for cheerleading right after the summer vacation, and the subsequent high school musical. Those are exhausting activities.

Moreover, our team members are from three classes and we have different class schedules and homework, which made our contact very time-consuming. Nevertheless, we remind each other of meetings. Even though we may miss meetings due to other activities, we bring our tasks back home to complete. Important notes during meetings are passed on to those who missed them. We have tried our best to minimize the impact of our busy high school life on the project progress

Our Project Sound Bite

All of our team members are very talented, and we are confident to make a better project than others. On the other hand, as team members have different traits, there are often disagreements, and we could not be united. Moreover, some team members may not be able to complete assigned tasks on time due to their occupied schedule.

In this Cyberfair project we learned many things, such as making webpages, soliciting responses from other people regarding our ideas, researching on data, finding interview subjects, and discovering strong local awareness. From this research theme, we see our city from a brand new perspective, and explore our place of residence from dimensions that we never thought of before.

This Cyberfair project took a long time. We often carry out interviews after school or even on weekends. Yet, we don't regret it, for we got this rare opportunity to explore the city, our surroundings, and even ourselves from a new angle

What has been the impact of your project on your community

The theme of this project is City Yeast, which is an organization that devotes to promote unique features of the city. We have gathered information about City Yeast from many angles, through which we see the city from a new perspective. The Balcony Project reveals the lack of community awareness and selfishness of the city residents. By reading the books published by City Yeast, we realize that Taipei lacks beauty in many areas. The concept of “non- globalization“ advocated by City Yeast needs improvement, which can be seen from gradual traditional culture loss and globalization trends on the streets. We encountered many difficulties when proposing activities on campus. Practicing creativity and design in real life requires efforts by many people.

In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your Cyberfair project both on-line and in person?

  1. We interviewed Ms.Chou, Ms. Ye, Mr. Wang, Mr. Tang, Mr. Ilteris Ilbasan, Mr. Gaston Caba and Ms. Seiko Mastumura, participants of City Yeast. We told them our goals to improve the city, exchanging creative design ideas from their experience in City Yeast.

  2. We distributed questionnaires on streets to let more people know about City Yeast, conveying our intention of improving the environment around us. We hope that we can have responses from more people.

  3. We participated in City Yeast activities "Food Zero Waste" and "Super City Forum" in order to experience what City Yeast intends to convey to the public, and have further contact with City Yeast and its participants.

  4. We held various activities related to creativity and design through our club, including “Metamorphosis”, “My October”, and “New Art”. We hope that the change of creativity and design can start from us.

  5. We visited the City Yeast public base on Treasure Hill Artist Village in order to know more about activities and impact of City Yeast on the public.

Contribution to the local community

Our project theme is to learn about the concepts of City Yeast, and explore the possibilities of encouraging more people to engage in the activities, and thus, make differences and highlight the features of the city. We follow the concepts of “non-globalization” and “viscuous city”, adhering to concepts of creativity and design to make Taipei a unique, creative place

Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises

Webpage making takes a very long time. We did not do our best on completing the tasks or being efficient. We held many meetings, and assigned tasks to everyone. However, problems kept emerging when the deadline comes near. We kept reminding each other about time management and the importance of work planning. Time management and planning are the biggest lessons we learnt.
