“San Yu Elementary School” is a bright pearl located at the foot of Taipei’s Yangmingshan. Sanyu is located in the Tienmu area, where cultural heritage and resources are abundant, and where signs of exotic foreign cultures can be found around almost every corner. This area is rich in community resources, the parents here are happy to help promote academic activities, and the quality of the students is even. In addition, the teachers here work hard to provide exceptional learning experiences for the children. All of these advantageous factors come together in forming a fine, elegant, and unique Sanyu style of education that is exquisite in taste.
San Yu Elementary School has been established for total of 19 years. Many of Sanyu’s student share a mutual love for music, and many of the children who love to play musical instruments are extremely talented and have unlimited potential. To allow children to have a chance to make new friends through music, the initial route the school took was to establish extracurricular clubs, including the Choir, Rhythm Band Club, and Wind Instrument Band, to give children a chance to interact with each other through music, after school. Sanyu Elementary also occasionally held small-scale performance events.
After many years of successful operation, combined with the adjustment of the school’s human resources, Sanyu gradually advanced toward the direction of becoming “a music school without a dedicated music class.” Sanyu had the duel advantages of the presence of an extremely high-quality and enthusiastic music faculty, and a student body that was exceptionally gifted and knowledgeable in the area of music. Students at Sanyu complete the entire set of course material on the soprano recorder by the first semester of their sixth-grade year, and are gradually and are then systematically bridged over, in the second semester of grade six, to the alto recorder courses that they will be engaging in during their seventh-grade year. This process is designed to help reduce to pressure of having to learn an additional type of fingering method in a short period of time. Because of this, the fourth and sixth-grade “Joy with Music” Achievements Performance Concert has gradually become a tradition, and a consensus has also gradually been reached within the academic groups. The “Joy with Music” Achievements Performance Concert has now become a major annual highlight event for the mid and high grade-level students at Sanyu, with parents, teachers, and students all working together and achieving amazing results. At Sanyu, “One person, one exceptional talent” is not only a slogan, but is an accurate description of the extremely talented student body!
With their deep foundations in music, children at Sanyu are able to easily play beautiful tunes with their talented hands and sing pleasant songs with their melodious voices, which is also why the children at Sanyu need an even more professional stage for them to perform on and achieve their dreams. Beginning from the 2006 school year, in addition to developing even more opportunities for extracurricular musical club performances, the music teachers at Sanyu have also formed a consensus to gradually lead the band to further transformation. In the 2006 school year, the Wind Instruments Band officially transformed into a Recorder Club, which focuses on both performances and competitions. Shortly afterwards, the Choir, which originally only participated in non-competitive performances, significantly improved their chorus techniques, and began participating in musical competitions in the 2008 school year. They also hold annual musical theater performances. In the 2007 school year, the Thunder Drum Team was formed. The sound of drum band’s emotion-stirring drums has attracted the participation of a large number of students, and the band has frequently been invited as special guests in various opening ceremonies and events. In addition, the small yet talented String Orchestra has not only been invited to participate in many non-profit performances, but in recent years has also begun participating in competitions to encourage the students to continue improving their skills.
These musical clubs have always upheld their core principle and goal of “meeting new friends through music.” It is said that beautiful things are even more beautiful when shared – the children’s wishes are to be able to provide their ear-pleasing music for everyone to enjoy, which is why each of these four clubs have respectively performed at the community department stores in the Tienmu area, including the Takashimaya Department Store, Sin Kong Mitsukoshi, The Eslite Book Store, as well as SOGO, resulting in frequent exchange and cooperation with local businesses!
There are quite a few children’s homes, such as the Holy Way Children’s Home and the Saint Anna Children’s Home. The String Orchestra not only goes to these children’s homes for charity performances, the parent support group also provides donations and assistance to these organizations, resulting in frequent exchange and cooperation with local charity organizations as well!
The Recorder Club, string orchestra, choir, and Tienmu Junior High are sister groups, and in recent years have frequently been invited to participate in the graduation concert for the school! The emotion-stirring sounds produced by the Thunder Drumming Band are in line with the symbols of strength and beauty that the Taipei Physical Education College and the Northern District Athletic Meet set out to represent, which is why the band has frequently been invited as special guests at even openings and ceremonies at the Taipei Physical Education College and the Northern District Athletic Meet. The fourth and sixth grade annual musical achievements performance concerts are often held at special education schools, where the students and teachers there are invited to dance together, thereby facilitating mutual exchange and interaction with local schools and organizations!
During the Tienmu Waterway Festival held in March of every year, our fourth-grade students and teachers joyfully dress up and drum and gong their way over to the festival to participate in the festival chorus. The recorder club and the Thunder Drum Club have also both been invited to perform at this festival. These activities have facilitated exchange and interaction with the Local Development Foundation!
In recent years, we have frequently participated in international, inter-city, and inter-county exchange and interaction. Schools and organizations such as the Singapore Chinese Girls School and the Taoyuan Jing-yueh Elementary School Drum Team have visited our school to engage in friendship forming through drumming. Our musical clubs were invited to perform in the 2011 Taipei International Flora Exposition, and were an instant hit! These activities have facilitated in exchange and interaction on the inter-city, inter-county, and international stages!
The reason why Sanyu’s musical clubs have been able to become the focus of the entire campus is due to their hard work in their everyday music classes and practices. This is all due to the hard work of the passionate and enthusiastic teachers, who have always been able to combine classic and popular music styles, allowing our children to freely indulge in the vast available selection of domestic and foreign music from the past to the present, thereby developing their musical skills without them having to experience any difficulty or hardships. The external professional conductor and highly qualified part teachers that the school has hired in recent years have helped significantly in assisting the children improve their skills, and are a major factor behind the exceptional results that the children have achieved. In addition, the huge lineup of enthusiastic people in the support group has also played a very significant role in supporting our various teams. The school’s administrative team, with their clear and well-planned goals, has also been able to provide services that have been fast and accurate. These four powerful forces have allowed Sanyu’s musical clubs to become as bright as the stars, a pearl at the foot of the Yangmingshan.
