Organic Agriculture

WeimanReading this introduction on organic agriculture made me realize that in the present environment, we face the over-use of chemical fertilizers and agricultural pesticides. In addition to environmental pollution, other chemicals also seriously harm the human body. Therefore, if we want to solve this problem, then we need to widely promote organic agriculture.

Organic agriculture is none other than maintaining the production fertility of the soil, to use remains of other foods, elements eliminated from fowl and livestock, green fertilizers and other organic waste that is formed into compost fertilizer, and to use cultivation and crop rotation to maintain soil fertility. In addition, intercropping and biological controls are used to avoid insect pests and weeds. Organic agriculture is a kind of return to antiquity, and is not an innovation because during the age of our ancestors, this was how agriculture was undertaken.

At present, cultivation according to organic agricultural principles in Taiwan is still at the initial stage, and the amount of production of organic products is limited. Therefore, how to open up high efficient organic production, expanding market scale to have economic efficiency, and establish a system of production and marketing system that is trusted by consumers and makes them happy to use for purchasing products, are all urgent tasks for the organic agriculture of Taiwan.

HanchengOver these last few years, the over-use of chemical fertilizers and agricultural pesticides to elevate the productivity of traditional agricultural methods and the resultant environmental pollution and harm to human health, have already been censured more and more. Cuba has an Association of Organic Agriculture, through which to promote organic agriculture and let Cuba escape from the danger of famine. In 1999, together with an ecological entity in Columbia, it gained a Nobel Prize for “Correct Living, confirming that production methods of organic foods is the only basis of sustainable development.

Even though organic products are rather expensive, more and more consumers are willing to spend more energy and money to find naturally safe products. Yet the organic industry in Taiwan is based on rice. According to what statistical data reveals, in 2004, householders engaged in official farming in Taiwan number only 954; total surface area is 1246 hectares, including 744 hectares of rice paddies, 232 hectares of vegetables, 153 hectares of fruit trees, 76 hectares of tea trees, and 41 hectares of special products. But arable land in Taiwan reaches approximately 850,000 hectares of surface area; the total surface area devoted to organic production does not even reach 6.8 percent. This rate is even behind that of Africa.

“Why we need organic agriculture”

YaoshengOnly after reading this introduction did I realize the importance of organic agriculture for life, so we should continue to promote organic agriculture, thus making everybody’s lives more safe and more beautiful.

After reading the essay “Why we need organic agriculture,” I feel if it were not for organic agriculture, we could not eat healthy food; that is to say, when farmers spray agricultural chemicals, this will poison nearby soils. These poisons will spread around and enter plants; when eaten they will enter the belly and gradually collect in the body, so the human body will start to get sick. Because of the use of agricultural chemicals each year, we are losing up to one fourth of the biodiversity around the world; the number of annual deaths due to chemical poisoning is almost 220,000 persons. It is evident how much we need organic agriculture.

Zuyuan”Organic rice,” although the price is rather expensive, is able to safeguard our health. Cultivating organic rice can avoid plant diseases and harmful pests, and is able to maintain soil fertility. Following the changes brought about by time, the quality of life and the quality of food have been elevated. Now we stress “safety” and “nutrition,” we now have the production of “organic agriculture.” Since the World Trade Organization came to Taiwan, the impact on Taiwan has been unavoidable. Perhaps “organic farming” is able to open up a new day for us.

YouchengBecause of the progress of technology, modern man has been able to enjoy abundant, fast paced, and convenient lives. But as the book Is this Grass Field Pretty or Not describes they trade the natural environment for industrial development, which brings environmental pollution and destruction. The result is the original face of the planet is hard to restore; this is really scary.

I think organic agriculture was conceived under “environmental consciousness!” Organic agriculture is a production system able to be sustained regardless whether considered in terms of the soil, ecological system, or the health of humanity. It is a science with a mixed tradition, of innovation, and of scientific development. The purpose is to hope that mankind lives together with other living organisms in a symbiotic environment, letting the common mother of humanity—the earth—able to sustain its existence.

YaruThe over use of chemical fertilizers and agricultural pesticides to elevate the productivity of traditional cultivation methods over the last several years has already seriously destroyed the quality of life, polluted the environment, and harmed human health. So the over use of fertilizers is a major problem for agriculture on Taiwan. This has stimulated the development of organic agriculture on Taiwan. Although organic products are more expensive than normal products, in order for modern man to eat more healthily and more nutritiously, many consumers are willing to spend time as well as money to preserve their safety, and buy some ease of mind! After reading a detailed introduction about organic agriculture, it made me take an additional step in understanding and knowing how important “organic” agriculture is for our lives. Modern society has already taken steps towards the slogan of “only through going organic will we be going anywhere;” organic agriculture has become the natural way to go, and is a pronoun for being healthy.

SiwenDoing business to earn money must also earn peace of mind. One cannot earn money by illegal means, so when doing business one must have a conscience. One cannot sell inferior products to customers. A common saying has it that “What people do, Heaven is watching.” Therefore, cultivating fields is the same thing. In the course of cultivation, one cannot arbitrarily use agricultural chemicals. This not only will cause people to worry about their health when they eat, it will pollute the earth and water sources, even effect our children and grandchildren. I remember I once read a poem about commiserating with farmers: “With drops of sweat the grain is buried in the earth”—farmers like this use incomparable will power to produce crops where “each kernel is laboriously gained.” If we are able to let each of us eat more healthily, and eat with more peace of mind, this will be the greatest accomplishment of farmers. Organic agriculture is the correct decision for humanity and for the earth. Let’s live in peace with the nature!

XinhuiThe over use of chemical fertilizers and agricultural pesticides to elevate the productivity of agricultural methods, truly is the assassin for the  disease of modern civilization, and is the invisible man who is the destroyer of the ecology. Therefore, “organic agriculture” truly is a goal that mankind must pursue. I feel that modern society affords many conveyances, but there are many aspects that are cause for worry. Therefore, in order to be able to eat more healthily, more and more consumers are willing to spend more energy and money to purchase food that is commensurate with protecting the environment and safety and thereby have healthy bodies. Only in this way will we be able to accomplish even more ideals. Because organic agriculture requires large amounts of time, and neither chemical fertilizers nor pesticides are sprayed, instead organic fertilizers are used, therefore the money needed and human labor involved is rather a lot, so at present it is not widespread. I feel that this is a pity; I hope that more and more people will be able to use the most natural of methods and produce healthy products. This is a blessing for modern man!
