【What is Algal Reef】

Algal reef has the nature of plants, formed by red algae, green algae and calcareous algae by cementation, calcification, and the deposition of calcium carbonate. With slow speed, they only grow 0.1 to 0.2 cm in a year. Algal reefs are mainly located in Guanyin Township in Taoyuan County, Taiwan. Taiwan has the most complete algal reefs, covering ​​the most widely area with algal reefs. It is so precious that algal reefs in Taiwan have been identified over 2000 years. Algal reefs grow hard because of the damage of Taiwan power plants and China National Petroleum which buried pipeline. Although Taiwan's economic developed these years, the algal reefs area reduced significantly, from 5 kilometers reduced to 1.4 kilometers. Algal reefs are only 1.4 kilometers now. So we need to pay attention and conserve it. Algal reefs are rare, and require a long time to accumulate to turn a large spectacular sight. In addition, algal reef provide the place for many biological species in the sea to depend on. If algal reefs have been destroyed, the creatures will lose an important place for them, so we can see the importance of conservation.
Therefore, we hope to record the precious algal reefs resource by this project research and website construction. We would like to advocate the public to pay attention to the conservation of algal reefs.
