Preparation Conference (Part 1)

1. Time: December 24th 2010

2. Theme: preparation conference for TUAPA’s animal welfare education in our school (Part 1)

3. Content:

The education session was carried out in our class for a period. Next, we wanted to invite the TUAPA to promote in the school. We visited the TUAPA’s nursery site when we were in Grade 5 and deeply impressed from the experience. There were so many stray animals there, being abandoned by their owners. I also remembered that our teacher asked them whether they were willing to come to our school for an education session; they answered that they'd love to. If we invite them here, we would be able to publicize our idea more convincingly and also have a chance to eulogize those people who quietly took care of stray dogs and cats in this society.

The time was scheduled at 1:30 ~ 2:30 pm December 28th or January 4th. We would ask the TUAPA which day would be convenient.

Preparation Conference (Part 2)

1. Time: December 27th 2010

2. Theme of the conference: preparation conference for TUAPA’s animal welfare education in our school (Part 2)

Brother Mautou finally confirmed the time with us on January 4th. He suggested that we could divide the pupils into two parts: Grade 1~ 3 and Grade 4 ~ 6. In consideration of children at different age levels having different abilities in absorbing information, we should use diverse education ways. And then, our tasks are divided as follows:

  Grade

  Location

    Receptionist

    Equipment Borrowing

Recording Videos

Grade 1~3

Audiovisual Classroom

Teacher Du, Ying Jun, and Yu Jie

TUAPA arrived!

We began to work afterlunch. Ying Jun, Ke Jie, and Teacher Wen Long placed the computer, (TUAPA arrived at our school.)the digitallight processing projector, the curtain, the DV, and the stereo into the audiovisual classroom and the youth center. We could start the education session after TUAPA personnel came.

About at 1: 20 pm, the teacher’s mobile phone rang. It turned out that Brother Mautou arrived at the school gate. We immediately reported to the director and went to the school gate together to meet our guests. Wow ~ TUAPA sent five teachers here in all, including Brother Mautou, Brother Xiao Dai, Sister Xiao Zhang, Snow, and Ching Ching. There was also an elder sister especially responsible for taking photos. We were looking forward to the education session! It must be very interesting!

Entering the meeting place

When we heard the radio telling us to assembly in the audiovisual classroom and youth center with chairs, we divided into two groups, -- one group went after Teacher Du to the audiovisual classroomtogether with Brother Xiao Dai, (Bringing the chairs into the meeting place)Sister Xiao Zhang and Doggie Snow; the othergroup went after Director Si to the youth center with Brother Mautou and Doggie Ching Ching. During gathering, we were very curious that Ching Ching always rode on a tricycle. So we asked Brother Mautou why it did not walk. He told us that it was a stray dog once hit by a car. The accident caused its hind-limbs paralyzed. It couldn’t walk from then. Fortunately, people informed TUAPA, who rescued it and made the “Hot Wheels" for it, in order to let it run around by the aid of the tricycle. However, the tricycle wasn’t omnipotent. The vehicle would easily overturn on rugged road. So Brother Mautou held Ching Ching in his arms when we went to the youth center.

The correct and safe methods to contact with dogs

Firstly, Brother Mautou let us watch a movie called the "Love at First". This was about a German Shepherd. After it was abandoned by its owner, it found the way back home. But its master decided to abandon it again. On the way, it bit its tongue and committed suicide. The owner truly regretted. After I watched the movie, I nearly cried. This owner was really too cruel. Then, (Lowering your body to its level)Brother Mautou told us that there was a formulato be applied when we tried to approach dogs: watch, squat, speak, stretch out, and touch. First we should observe whether the dog's expression and behavior were aggressive; then squat down to the level of the dog, and say to it: "I want to be your friend"; and next, extend the fist to let it smell the scent; eventually, we could rub its chin or head. Brother Mautou also examined us on the spot. One child from Grade 4 went onto the stage to perform the correct movements. Brother Mautou praised that his movements were correct.

Genial Teacher Ah Xue

Snow was a doggie rescued by the TUAPA from a big snow mountain. Its back was scalded by the hot oil. Although it was recovered now, there was no hair at the wound place. It was as white as snow, and liked shaking hands with people very much.(Pupils in the lower grades were listening attentively.)So all the children in the lower grades went aroundBrother Xiao Dai and Snow to touch Snow. The scene was a little out of control! Fortunately, Brother Xiao Dai was experienced, and he could attract their attention. In order to record the interaction between children and Snow, I held the DV in one hand. But after less than three minutes, my hand became acid and trembled continuously. I used the other hand support it. My hands were so sour! It was not easy to be a photographer!

What could I do if a dog pursues me when I am riding a bicycle?

Brother Mautou told us what to do if dogs pursued us when we rode bicycles? He shared a story that (Let’s change from us.)he was pursued by a dogwhen he rode the bicycle. At first, he screamed and rode faster. The dog wasvery excited to hear his scream, so it chased after him until he disappeared. Finally, he came out a conclusion that when a dog chased after him, he would immediately stop and ask the dog: “what’s up?” The dog would stop chasing if it discovered that the person was harmless. This method was really special. In the past, I would ride as quickly as I could and I almost fell down when a dog chased after me. Next time I would try this method to see if it was really effective.

Time for award-winning question!

Time of award-winning question was our favorite! Brother Mautou asked a lot of questions, and also brought the Quarterlyfrom TUAPA as prizes. The cover of this issue was Ah Qiang, (Time for award-winning question!)who was a mastiffrescued by the federation. Its huge body scared us when the whole class visited the nursery site of TUAPA last year. We thought it was a bear. Brother Mautou said that it was a very gentle mastiff and we could touch it. Then we were relaxed and played with it. Xiao Kejie stepped on its poop. When we knew that, we all convulsed with laughter. Ah Qiang’s poop was so large; how could he step on it?

When I returned to the classroom, some pupils told me that Ah Qiang passed away. I felt very sad, but I also hoped that Ah Qiang would be happy in the heaven. I hoped that Ah Qiang could become a little angel, and would not reincarnate to this world. Or it might be thrown into the shelter again or be euthanized.

Ching Ching and Snow run on the playground happily

After the education session ended, Ching Chingand Snow could finally relax. They ran with(Running freely) Chocolate on the playground freely, and relieved the pressure from being a star just now. I went close to them and touched Ching Ching. When I called Ching Ching, it would come; but Snow would not come; it preferred playing by itself. I took a bag of snacks, which was eaten almost all by Ching Ching. Snow did not eat. So strange! Mautou brother said that Ching Ching seldom had an opportunity to run about, because the surface of the nursery site was not as flat as the playground in the school. It was why Ching Ching’s “Hot Wheels" could drive here and there without overturning. After playing for a while, they reluctantly left.

See you next time!

Finally, it was the time to say good bye. TUAPA’s animal welfare education session in our school came to a close. We had no idea when we could meet again. In the end, we took a photo of all of us in front of the Schoolfellow Pavilion. We hoped that the two lovely dogs would not forget us!

A week later, TUAPA shared the photos oftheir (Taking a photo before departure)animal welfare education session at DaXing Elementary School on their website. We hoped that more and more people would join the group forprotecting animals.
