When I knew that we would join the schools cyberfair, I totally had no idea about what topic we should do. Then Ms. Yang introduced about Smangus. She said that Smangus was an Atayal tribe, located far away in the high mountain of Hsinchu County. They lived by tourism and peach farms. In the past, the tribal people would undercut prices to get more customers. That caused a price competition and they could only make little money. Several years ago, someone initiated co-operation. Most tribal people managed the tour business together. After that, the business was getting better and they were making more money. We thought that it’s interesting and many of us would like to visit, so we decided to work on this topic.
On collecting the data about Smangus, we found that websites about Smangus were really rare. There were only two main websites. So we set up the website with our own records from visiting Smangus and some papers about Smangus.
At first, we read papers about Smangus. We learned about the join operation and Smangus from those papers. Then, we started to edit the website.
On visiting Smangus, we learned more about the history of Smangus. What impressed me the most was the music that the chief played with their traditional instrument. The rhythm was simple, but it told stories about Atayal.
When we had collected enough data, we started to write. We had to write lots of articles and translate them into English. Some were translated at school and others were translated at home. Then we had to send them to our English teacher for checkup. I think it’s a hard time for us.
With teacher’s help, we even designed a game for the website.
I think that it’s really a hard time, but we’ve got more than we’ve paid, especially the sense of achievement.
