The Smangus believes that “Gaga” includes all aspects of their lives: the universal pheonmenon, the teachings and warnings from Utux (the ancestors), guidance and words of elders, the process of ritual ceremonies, interpersonal relationships, and personal behaviors and working abilities. All these are “Gaga”.
Violating Gaga is a very serious matter for a member of the Smangus of the Atayal tribe. It brings serious disaster and misfortune to himself/herself and to his/her family and even to the tribe. The sins have to be absolved through a series of ritual ceremonies. Then, the person can regain recognition and acceptance from the tribe.
To the Smangus who lives in remote areas, food sharing and Gaga norms have let them live a peaceful secluded life.
