Do you know who Mangus is? He is the ancestor of Smangus!	Mangus is the mortar holding of the wood-carvings.
The clansmen of Smangus lived in Nantou Ren-ai town Ruiyan tribe about 1000 years ago. They started to migrate towards the North. On their way, they had stayed in many places. About 400 years ago, they came to Smangus. Mangus was the chief that led the ancestors of Smangus to cultivate this place. After he died, this place was name “Smangus”, in memory of Mangus. The letter “S” before his name means memory.
Mangus was an outstanding warrior of Atayal. He could fight with Formosan black bear bare-handed! He was brave, so he had tattoos on his face. Tattoos are the highest honor in Atayal.
He was a person who was responsible, industrious, and full of kindness. At that time, there were about 20.30 families. When other families had no millet to eat, he would share. This is Mangus, all Smangus’ ancestor, a great warrior and a role model for us!
