Ms. Cheng passed away at home on January 14, 2009 for
gastric cancer. She was 68. Puyuma Association held a memorial
ceremony for Ms. Cheng in the afternoon of January 22. Many
people gathered at the ceremony including her family members,
friends and relatives, and students. They all came to pay
her tribute.
Ms. Cheng was the fourth child at home. Sisters call her
3rd Sister. Friends as close as siblings call her Sister
Cheng.
The mood of the ceremony was sad and solemn. A few guests
came to the podium to express their feelings about Ms. Cheng.
They all shared the same admiration to Ms. Cheng’s teaching
contributions in promoting Puyuma language. After completing
her last 120-hour language networks activity in 2008, she
left this world peacefully.
Even in her final stage of gastric cancer, Ms.
Cheng still insisted on continuing her share to work for
the language promotion. Her bravery and perseverance touch
every teacher who comes to her assistance in teaching no
matter how far they need to travel, some from Kaohsiung
and some from Taitung. They have only one goal, to continue
teaching their language to generations to come.
Those who came to the podium to speak all mentioned that
Ms. Cheng would prepare breakfast in person for every teacher
who came all the way to teach. She dragged her weak and
skeleton body to bring breakfast to classroom and warmly
chat with teacher and students. Every teacher is fully touched
by her heartfelt warmth. |

Ms. Cheng’s contributions prior to her death in promoting
indigenous language are obvious to all. She was the first
teacher to obtain the Certification of Indigenous Language
and started to teach the language in elementary schools
in Taipei County. There was a time when she had to teach
in five elementary schools on a weekly schedule. Far or
near she was willing to go. Even there was only one student
learning Puyuma language in the entire school, she would
go and would not give up the chance. Her goal is to let
more children to accept mother tongue education and let
parents to support their children in study as education
can improve their family condition.
Ms. Cheng had hosted many indigenous language learning camps
and had been judge for many activities or competitions.
She had very high self expectation. For every mission, she
prepared herself carefully and always made the best out
of it. It is obvious to see how hard she worked from the
arrangement of teachers and programs for each learning camp.
Since there aren’t too many Puyuma language teachers,
Ms. Cheng often invited teachers located in Taitung to come
to Taipei to assist. She showed great respect and warmth
to those teachers coming from afar. Not only did she entertain
them at home, but she also prepared meals for them. Ms.
Cheng treated them like sisters.
