Since the women and children's section is completely separated from the other male prisons, the lines separating them are usually also blocked, and not even staff members can go through them. However, there were only basketball courts and exercise areas on the male side of the prison. So, the women cannot do other sorts of exercise in the prison, and can only take walks on the lawn in front of their cells. This lawn was the first Taiwanese location at which people discovered the Malayan Night Heron, colloquially named the "mountain's dark light," with black crest feathers on the head and a dark brown back; it was a rare bird species in Taiwan at the time.
