1Last bridge of Mr. Ho Ming-de – Hsingyuan Bridge (NO.230)

Special features: The Hsingyuan Bridge, which was opened to the public on June 28, 1998, was the final bridge built by Mr. Ho, who passed away in February 1, 1998. The surprising thing is that the name of “Hsingyuan Bridge” was decided in November 1997, and seemed to foretell the completion of Mr. Ho’s merit works.

Additionally, in order to commemorate Ho Ming-de, Chia-yi Charity Organization named the 231st bridge “Huaide Bridge,” to express the fact that the memory of Mr. Ho will forever remain in the people’s hearts.

1Longest and most solid concrete bridge – Hsingcheng Bridge (NO.216)

Special features: On March 26, 1996, a 160m new style concrete bridge costing 17.8 million dollars was born. At the opening ceremony, Mr. Ho Ming-de had the following thoughts: “It is regrettable to have a stream without a bridge. This Hsingcheng Bridge is the most expensive and difficult bridge of the Charity Organization. I am proud that it can be completed before the rainy season this year.” In fact, Hsingcheng Bridge not only survived the May rains, but also withstood Typhoon Herb, Typhoon Toraji, and even the 921 Earthquake. Compared to the breakages of Ruitsao Bridge and Tongtou Bridge that cross the same Chingshui Stream, we can see the strength in genuine materials used by Chia-yi Charity Organization.

1The most children-friendly bridge – Renhsiung Bridge (NO.326)

Special features: It is a “ㄇ” shape and painted with colors, crossing the intersection of Youai Road and Youchong Road. Due to concern over the Boai Elementary School students, the Chia-yi Charity Organization built the 326th “Renhsiung Bridge,” which is the second walkway bridge built by the Chia-yi Charity Organization. Over two hundred volunteers worked in the rain to build the bridge, including the oldest 94 year old grandmother volunteer, Lu Linchin, and other members from all over the country. Everyone contributed money or effort to help in the bridge building construction.

1The most beautiful hanging bridge – Yiren Hanging bridge (hanging bridges are unnumbered)

(Source: Chia-yi City Chia-yi Charity Organization website)

Special features: This is a hanging bridge built in 1952, which crosses the Niucho Stream. The bridge is the longest extant hanging bridge in Chiayi and is the primary transportation route between Chuchi Village Wan Bridge, Yiren, and Yihe villages. In 1976 and 1994, the rock walls were renovated with help of Master Kaotong, abbot of Chinghuashan Temple and Chia-yi Charity Organization. Walking on the hanging bridge can allow one to see the beautiful scenery underneath.

1The most difficult bridge to build – Hsingjing Bridge (No.195)

(Source: Chia-yi City Chia-yi Charity Organization website)

Special features: Built in May 1993 in Lichia Township, Alishan Village, this was the most difficult bridge to build. Because the work site was located in the mountains, it was necessary to leave at 6 in the morning, spend three to four hours in the car before reaching the destination. Because in the afternoon, the mountains would begin to fog, it was necessary to leave home at 2pm; any later would be dangerous. Furthermore, because “Hsingjing Bridge” was a bridge in the mountains, it was very difficult to construct the bridge pier, thus this short 29m bridge took seven weeks to complete. Even though it was difficult, no one said they were tired.
