Finally, we have completed this project.

From the very first planning to the finish of this webpage now, it’s about one year of time.

When we just start third grade, teacher Lin told us that we should participate the cyber fair. We were just clueless at that time, and had no idea what that was about. However, after viewing other contestants’ winning projects, we became very motivated, and thought there’s no way we can’t do what others had accomplished.

Then there came the question, what topic should we choose?

The teacher said, it has to do with local culture, and it better comes from what surrounded by you in your life.

We’ve been contemplating on this question for a really long time.

Suddenly, some sensational smell of hot rice dumpling from someone’s lunchbox drew our attention. We all yelled in happiness, “There we go, our topic is about rice dumpling.” However, we can’t put our emphasis mainly on rice dumpling since the teacher specifically told us, it has to do with local surroundings.

Gradually, the concept of dragon boat festival has come into our mind.

It’s not only the traditional festival for us, but also has deep meanings and tons of activities. Therefore we figured, this should be the best topic of all.

However, when we started the project, we realized there is a gap between dream and reality.

Speaking of dragon boat festival, we all came up with the ideas of dragon boat, rice dumpling, fragrant sachet, and so on. However, do we really know their origins? Can anyone make a rice dumpling by his/her own? How do you present our research project? At this time, we all had different opinions and couldn’t come to a conclusion.

Thankfully, our teacher stood out and lead us, analyzed the whole project, helped us to prioritize, and to found the right direction.

The teacher suggested us to interview the master who made dragon boats. He is a man of national treasure himself. His handwork is an exquisite work of art and the dragon boat he made is impeccable. The dragon boat does not need to be tested in the water for experiment, you can always find it even from the dragon head to its tail. This is the master we must go for an interview. Besides, most of us never try to make a rice dumpling before, let’s do it our own, experience how crafty the ladies in the past were, since they all need to make some festival food by themselves. We’ll try to do the experiment, have a taste sampling and see what flavor do ordinary people love to eat, it must be some fun game. At the end on the dragon boat racing day, we interviewed some foreigners to see how they think ofTaiwan, to dragon boat festival, and to dragon boat rowing. We think combining these together, we could make a comprehensive project.

Looking back, we realized we’ve spent much time on each activity. Sometimes even when we’ve made detailed plans, and went through the steps in mind, we’ll still find some segments that went wrong, and have to start it all over. And we also run into some difficult situations due to lack of planning ahead. The ten of us have to work closely, try to help and encourage each other. And we finally completed every activity. Although we’re not in the same class, we have better and stronger relationships than others. We all understand that it is essential to have everyone’s cooperation in order to get things done.

Through this event, we come to a deep realization that our local culture is very interesting, it is in-depth, and all the customs rising from different timings and seasons are all connected with our daily lives. These are not merely some festival activities.

TheTaipei city government sent out invitations, and many foreigners came toTaiwan to participate the dragon boat race. They not only take part in our festival events, they can also experience the beauty ofTaipei city, and the warmth of our people.

After finishing this research, we realize that living in an international city likeTaipei, the hustle and bustle of a modern society can still blend perfectly with the elegance and slowness of a traditional culture.

We sincerely wish that in every coming festival celebration, no matter adults or children, can all participate in the events with our heart, and courageously promote our culture to foreign friends. Introducing local culture via splendid events, that’s exactly the ultimate goal of the cyber fair!

Coming up,Taipei city will take responsibilities for The 21st Summer Deaflympics in Taipei in 2009 This will be another great chance for international culture exchange. We welcome all of you to join them, cheer for them, and to witness their perseverance, courage and determination.
