Obstacles & Impacts

After many interviews with experts in environment protection and onsite investigations, we realized that the amount of litter on Xianji Rock has gradually gone down over the years under the efforts from environmental groups to clean it regularly. Also, an increasing number of tourists are behaving themselves and do not litter. This is a great phenomenon. However, more efforts are required to make Xianji Rock really clean. In addition to garbage, Xianji Rock has other problems, such as illegal constructions, invasion of foreign animals and plants, and the uncontrolled practice of growing crops. These problems cannot be ignored. They are as follows

The tint huts and other illegal constructions not only have damaged the environment, but also invaded the habitat of animals and plants.
The situation of illegal constructions has become worsened due to indifference of some residents. When the government ordered demolition, many hikers, elders, and residents responded with rage. The cliff adjacent to Xianyan Temple is surrounded by wire fences for safety, and prohibited for hiking. Therefore, negotiating with residents to revive Xianji Rock is the common goal of the government and public.

Because they have no natural enemies in Xianji Rock, they propagate fast and impact the indigenous ecology.
The manmade development and land reclamation, along with planting of alien plant species on Xianji Rock, has affected the ecology of the area. The secondary vegetation from natural evolution has been replaced by alien species.

The ecological development of Xianji Rock is maintained by specific environmental group, the excessive planting by local residents would damage the environmental planning.
The beauty of natural ecology and landscaping is a delicate blind point to modern people. When the issue of ˇ§greenhouse effect, greenhouse gas reductionˇ¨ is widely discussed worldwide, we should respect the nature's design. There are many vegetable gardens planted by residents on Xianji Rock. We have no rights to consume the natural resources, and the government should plan alternative areas outside the Xianji Rock.
The government should provide alternative spaces before demolition, and provide environmental education, so that local residents could understand the importance of ecology to themselves and mankind.
The ecological development of Xianji Rock is maintained by specific environmental group, the excessive planting by local residents would damage the environmental planning.

Although these problems are not yet solved, there is no serious damage done. If more funding and volunteers could be raised and recruited for environmental groups to improve the ecology of Xianji Rock, along with moral education to the local residents and visitors, Xianji Rock could be revived and become the best green land in Taipei .
Xianji Rock in Wenshan District, Taipei City is gifted with culture and beautiful sceneries. Yet, with fast social transition, the culture and landscape have changed significantly. Our ancestors' paths in reclamation and folk tales have been buried by urban development. As local residents, with concern over our community, we hope to introduce the ecology, history, culture, and current environmental problems to the local residents. Some think that the modern life has no close relation to the nature, and is created by men's wisdom and technology. This is indeed wrong. Until today, the food, clothes, houses, and transportation we consume, including farms, ranches, woods, energy, and even clean water, are directly or indirectly taken from the nature.
Because of our endless dependence and demand, the primitive forests on earth have diminished, the variety of biological species in forests and rivers has declined. To sustain our survival and hand over the earth to our decedents, ecological balance and biodiversity should be prioritized.
