Listen to that music from the woods...

V.Bamboo Musical Instruments

1.Wind Instruments

a. Nose Flute
Judged from the name, the instrument is played with one's nose. Listening to its high-pitch elegant sound is just like being in an Asian forest or forested mountains. (It has a soft tone, so one has to listen carefully.)
The middle one is the Double Nose Flute, and the one on the left is the Nose Flute.
b. Double Nose Flute
It makes touching sounds of sadness and helplessness, and is mostly used for the evening performance.

c. Bamboo Flute

It can be performed in water to produce echo effects; the amount of the air that the performer blows into the Bamboo Flute may also affect its tones. Putting water into a bucket, and moving the bamboo flute upward and downward can produce the musical effects.

d. Blowing Tube
It produces whistling sounds, which resemble the bird singing or the locomotive moving when the bamboo pipes are played together.

2. Percussion Instruments

a. Bamboo Xylophone
It produces loud yet shrill sounds, which are associated with the sounds of waving trees, sweeping winds, fun-having birds, and dripping water. It is played by being struck by sticks, similar to the xylophone or the glockenspiel.
b. Bamboo Glockenspiel
The resonant sounds and echoing effects make it a solo instrument. Its sound resemble that of the glockenspiel, more piercing than the aforementioned Bamboo Xylophone.
c. Stick and the Slit Tube
It produces loud and piercing sounds that release joy, excitement, and the sensation to dance. It may make a multiple-scale instrument by adding bamboo nodes, which is still under experiment.
d. Stamping Tube
It makes deep yet elegant sounds that bring joy and fun by hitting on the ground. The length of the bamboo tube determines its tone.
e. Buzzer
The loud, warm and sincere buzzing sounds are produced, similar to the sound of hitting a quilt: Duai Duai.
f. Bamboo Drum
A bamboo drum is composed of all sizes of sliced bamboos. A piece of material, such as a round piece cut from a plastic cushion, is used to strike on the round holes on the bamboo drum. Low and loud noises are produced.
g. Portable Bamboo Drum
It is a miniature of the bamboo drum. (A brainchild of Elder Wan)

3.Stringed Instruments

a. Coconut Fiddle

As the term implies, it is made of coconuts, also called "Shell Fiddle."

b. Can Fiddle
It is made of iron cans. Don't make little of it; it produces lovely sounds.
c. Bamboo Fiddle
It is made of bamboo tubes, characterized by the tones as the Bass Bamboo Fiddle or the Sopranino Bamboo Fiddle. The photo on the right side is the Bass Bamboo Fiddle made by Grandpa Wan himself, and it is nearly one meter at length.
d. Jews-Harp
It can produce elegant tunes and the sounds like Duai Duai and sometimes, the overtones of mystery. It is also an instrument to be played at night. In the past, when a man needed a mate, he simply played the Bamboo Harmonica in front of the woman's house, and the woman made a decision of whether to go out with the man by judging the music quality he has played.

4.Other Instrument

a. Saw Fiddle
This instrument is not made by Grandpa Wan; it is bought. It is not easy to play the instrument; sometimes it can't produce a sound. The sound of the saw fiddle resembles the background music used in horror movies and it can make one get goose bumps.
b. Accompaniment Tube
On the surface, it has many deep-chiseled marks that need to be scratched by a flat bamboo piece to make a silvery sound. It is played as the accompaniment. (The one in the front is the Blowing Tube, and the one in the back is the Accompaniment Tube.)
