Name of the city: Kaohsiung City (was originally known as”TaKau”)

Location: 120°E, 22°N

Land area: 153.6029 square kilometers.

Terrain

Kaohsiung is built on an alluvial fan. Two mountains stand out on the flat land—one of them is mt. Chai (355 meters high); the other is Mt. Banping (233 meters high). Besides, the Fengshan hill separates Kaohsiung City from Kaohsiung County.

Hydrology

The main river in Kaohsiung City is called “Love River”. During the period of Japanese colonial rule, it was called “Kaohsiung River”; After World War II, it was renamed as “Ren-ai River”. The Love River flows mainly through Gushan section and Yencheng section and finally goes under the Kaohsiung Bridge into the Kaohsiung Harbor. In the past, this lovely river was seriously polluted because of massive industrial development in Kaohsiung. Fortunately, the city government has been devoted to cleaning up the river and renovation along the river. The Love River is now a popular recreation resort and brings a refreshing appearance to Kaohsiung City.

The city mark

Kaohsiung City is a major industrial and harbor city in Taiwan. In 1974, the government launched a mark-designing competition

in order to create a unique mark to represent Kaohsiung city. From July 12 to 31, 79 pieces of were sent in to join the competition. The winner was Mr. Lin Chou-chen and his design therefore became the mark of Kaohsiung City.

The Kaohsiung City mark uses “”, the first of the two Chinese characters of Kaohsiung. The blue gear wheel represents the development of Kaohsiung City leads the Kaohsiung citizens to move ahead and makes life better. The golden “”character represents the spirit of team work and development which leads to the way of success.

Kaohsiung LOGO

In 1999, to welcome the coming of the millennium, city government held a “Kaohsiung 2000” logo-designing competition to create a new image to represent Kaohsiung City.

From May 15, 1999 to June 5, 732 pieces of designs were sent in. On June 11, 6 best pieces were chosen. The six pieces were displayed from June 26 to July 18 for public voting. The winner was Mr. Ho Chun-yen.

Mr. Ho’s design modifies the Chinese character of “” and makes it look like a ship speeding ahead. Regarding the use of colors, “orange” represents passion; “golden” represents ceaseless life; “green” represents the growing city; the “blue” ocean indicates the unique characteristic of Kaohsiung as a harbor city.

Information

As the ship sails into the huge harbor, the city skyline comes into sight. Surrounded by the bold and generous atmosphere and the greenery along the bay, Kaohsiung is indeed a welcoming harbor city.

Back in the Dutch colonial period, Kaohsiung was already a major export station. The unpredictable ocean cultivates humility and tolerance in the character of Kaohsiung citizens. As the Han people moved in and opened up Kaohsiung, they brought prosperity to this harbor city by international trade. The history of Kaohsiung adds layers of colors and significances to its culture. Once “desert of culture” is now a major city harboring various cultural activities.

Business and trade in the neighboring areas benefit from the prosperity of export. Sanduo Shopping District is one of them. Thanks to the convenience of transportation and flourishing trade of Kaohsiung harbor, the business and trade in Sanduo Shopping District is thriving. Together with other shopping and business districts around the city, the competitiveness of Kaohsiung is fortified.

In recent years, city government has been dedicated to city development, including infrastructures and cultural activities. With thoughtful plan of the government and the support from the citizens, Kaohsiung city is like a train moving ahead steadily on the track. Kaohsiung is now a changing city.
